I assist you in reaching your sports goals through my 10 session process called energy optimization.
Do you suffer from performance anxiety when the pressure is on to compete? Do you train well but can't put it together when it's time to shine? Have you experienced a set back in your playing after an injury? If you answered yes to any of these questions know these symptoms are not your fault. These performance issues come from the grit and hard work which have made you the resilient athlete you are. But in order to keep your performance on point you need to train your brain like you train your body to get you back on top!

The world can always feel like it's changing. It's scary to be in transition or feel insecure about decisions whether it be about school, work, or relationships. We know that living with uncertainty leaves us feeling uncomfortable. Our emotional mood and ability to manage anxiety and stress plays a crucial role in our ability to function on daily basis. Therapy is learning to prioritize, communicate needs, feel more secure, make adjustments, think differently, be less self-critical, and boost self-esteem. It’s also about being present, grounded and balanced. Not so easy, especially doing it on our own! It's okay to ask for help.

You are sitting on your couch at home after a day of work and wondering for the thousandth time what your life looks like. You think to yourself, am I headed in the right direction to get what I want out of life? You wonder how to succeed in your career or to find a partner because you don’t even know where to start looking. When you ask a person for a date or a job you feel lost when you wonder what you should be asking or looking for in this person. If you are already in that relationship you’re wondering if you should stay or leave it. If you’re married, you are thinking similar thoughts.

My ideal client is someone ready to confront their mental health challenges and grow from the experience. They may be dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or a variety of emotional and psychological challenges and are seeking effective strategies to manage these issues. I take a holistic approach to psychotherapy underpinned by my theoretical perspective, CBT. It’s present focused, utilizing mindfulness practice as an adjunct strategy. My training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy allows me to provide skills based options when needed. Having experience with trauma therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, rounds out therapy options.

The idea of being sound of mind and sound of body helped me start to see the pieces of the puzzle, and, reflecting on my own athletic career that I eventually unpacked and processed allowed me to see the bigger picture of wellness. I recognized that physiology and psychology go hand in hand, influencing my philosophy on what truly comprises wellness. Thus, I gravitated towards a comprehensive approach to health, an approach to psychology, perhaps motivated by the field of kinesiology, one that considers the human form as a whole; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, together.

I specialize in working with college athletes, college students, and adults who are navigating anxiety, performance pressure, injury recovery, identity concerns, and the emotional challenges that can come with transitioning out of sports.
You may be used to being the person who keeps pushing through, performs under pressure, and handles everything on your own. From the outside, it may look like you have it together, but internally, you may be struggling with anxiety, burnout, stress, self-doubt, or feeling overwhelmed by the constant pressure to succeed. For college athletes and high-performing young adults especially, it can feel exhausting trying to balance academics, athletics, relationships, family expectations, identity, and future uncertainty all at once.

How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
