I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) specializing in trauma with a subspecialty in
sexual abuse
, working with victims and sexually-abusive youth.
Becoming a therapist was my first choice, a passion I discovered during my sophomore year as an undergrad. Of course, it was not my first major, as I thought I would attend medical school. However, due to a car accident, I had to take a break from classes with laboratory courses, which led me to psychology. The best methods to pique anyone's interest are, in my opinion, abnormal psychology and personality psychology; they started my passion for learning more. After earning my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I applied for my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialty in Latino Family Studies.

I work with individuals, couples, & families challenged by many mental health disorders, especially sexual
assault
& abuse, relational issues, and life transitions (COVID ,divorce, career, medical, etc).
As we recover from COVID and the uncertainty, many of us are experiencing increased anxiety & other concerns. I believe that all human beings have innate unique strengths & my work focuses on exploring from a holistic, integrative, & collaborative perspective what concerns my clients may be experiencing. I have found that within a safe & nurturing environment, growth can occur in an organic profound way. I work with anxiety/depression, complex trauma, life transitions, grief, & relational issues etc. My approach is joining the client on their journey in helping clients achieve their goals while enriching their lives.

In my practice, I focus mostly on walking with clients through some of the most difficult events in their lives. Whether an experience was considered “traumatic” or not, if it still haunts you or causes you uncomfortable physical responses like a racing heart or feeling sick to your stomach, these can be treated with EMDR or Brainspotting.

You are already that much more courageous to be searching for a way to find help. If you experienced a trauma, struggle with anxiety or question your self-worth. Know that you are not alone and there is hope to make positive changes in your life. As a licensed therapist, I am trained to deal with a wide range of issues that affect one's relationship with self and others, but I have special training in assisting individuals, couples and families to adjust to change and to reclaim their lives following an unexpected event whether the event is recent or occurred many years ago. Reclaiming your life involves imagining and taking action on what comes next so I look to you to define how life would look at its most optimum and focus on goals that will bring that vision into being.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
