Getting to the heart of a problem with compassion and skill, whether it be depression, anxiety, unresolved relationship difficulties, or just being stuck at some place in life, is the key to bringing about a true internal shift that leads to change and relief. People often come to me who have tried other approaches to their suffering, and I am frequently told that, within a few sessions, they begin to experience a new way of relating to themselves and others. I'm happy to discuss further.

Mindfulness is also actively incorporated into my practice.
My interest in Marriage and Family Therapy stems from a desire to fill a gap that was present in my own community. Having had experiences where an unbiased sounding board could have been pivotal in navigating unstable relationships, I set a path that allowed me to be the change I wanted to see. The general philosophy that anchors my practice is “building healthy relationships one story at a time.” This includes the relationship with oneself. There is no one fits all solution to a problem, or one way of getting to a place of feeling well. This in mind I aim to listen, learn, validate, and advocate for what “works” for my clients.

My approach draws from several schools of psychoanalysis and spiritual/existential philosophies that cultivate mindfulness, self-awareness, and emphasize personal responsibility.
Do you feel a kind of loneliness that’s hard to name? Not the kind that fades with company, but a quieter sense that you move through life unseen, as if no one truly recognizes who you are. Maybe you’ve felt this way for a long time. Perhaps you’ve asked yourself: Is something wrong with me? Or is the world not built for someone like me? I work with people who experience chronic loneliness that often has nothing to do with social skills or anxiety, but with how they think, feel, relate, and seek meaning. My work supports those navigating identity, belonging, emotional honesty, and inner transformation.

I have specialized in relational trauma for years and I believe in the power of connection. I am dedicated to helping my clients feel confident in relationships with people who make them feel safe. I decided to become a therapist after the Columbine shooting occured. I was deeply saddened by that act of violence among students and left my job in advertising 20 years ago to complete my master’s degree in psychology. Something about me that is unique is that I have close friendships for 35 years and I continuously seek and value new friendships and connection.

I provide culturally sensitive psychotherapy to adolescents and adults struggling with mood and anxiety disorders and childhood trauma, integrating neurobiology-informed psychological interventions and mindfulness based practices as well as other evidence-based therapeutic tools, combined with teachings of Eastern schools of thought.
Buddha's quote "The mind is everything. What you think you become", has always been at the center of my beliefs, both personally and professionally. Therefore, I view therapy as a tool that enables us to transcend beyond our previously adopted and perhaps less effective ways of coping with life's challenges, allowing us to rewire our brain by relearning new ways of dealing with challenges, as they arise. This will in turn open up many new windows to self-awareness, ultimately bringing about personal growth and satisfaction both internally and within the context of our relationships, allowing us to live happier more fulfilled lives.

We live in a divided world and it can feel painful and isolating. Parts of ourselves and our lives may feel fractured, disconnected, silenced. Research shows that self-censorship is at an all-time high, which is not surprising as we try to navigate these uncharted waters of further division and polarization. Many are struggling to make sense of this new reality and find a way to cope, retain a sense of self, decide how to manage their relationships, and how to move forward in a way that agrees with their sense of right and wrong.

My goal as a licensed psychologist is to help individuals, couples, families, and groups find harmony between what they "think," how they "feel," and what they "do" as they work through multiple life challenges and demands. Since its beginning, the vision of my practice has focused on providing culturally-sensitive mental health services to diverse populations exhibiting a full range of difficulties and psychological disorders. This vision is launched from a cognitive-behavioral framework. My practice reflects the insight offered by Albert Einstein: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." Hence, for change to happen, "thinking matters."

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
