Therapy for Individuals,
Couples
, and Families. You are here reading about me because you have likely been suffering – individually or with the ones you love. I have always said “We are messy people…” Our feelings, thoughts, actions often cause unintended conflict – miscommunication devolving into an increasing distance with those we intend to be closer to. Sound familiar? I have been an active advocate for families for over 30 years and a psychotherapist for nearly 20 years with a private practice focusing on Marital and Family discord, trauma recovery, severe depression, the treatment of anxiety disorders and chemical dependency

My clinical approach to healing is humanistic, client-centered, and attachment-focused. I facilitate connection through emotional attunement, curiosity, and empathy that is predicated on non-judgement through a strengths-based lens. The therapeutic join is co-constructed collaboratively with individuals/
couples
/families who wish to do deep reparative work. Unresolved material can keep a system "stuck" in a feedback loop of historical/multigenerational pattern replication that is no longer effective/has become unmanageable. Clinical focus aims to excavate maladaptive mechanisms, shed faulty programming, and create opening for change.

Couples
and families are able to reconnect to each other by learning how to communicate in an understanding and caring way.
Life is full of challenges, and most of the time we are capable of handling them on our own. However, sometimes things can get too overwhelming and stressful, and we need help. As a licensed therapist for over 20 years, I understand the anxiety, hope, and fear that go with seeking therapy.

Does the distance between you feel unbearable at times? Perhaps you can't find the will or the courage to draw near your
partner
. Resentment and distrust may have widened the gap. Though reactive fights stand in the way of the tenderness you need, your heartfelt friendship could be just below the surface. Hoping it will get better, we wait to get help, while patterns reinforce distance and a negative view of each other. We become less willing to reveal ourselves or seek comfort and friendship from our most important person. You both really deserve your measure of happiness.

I use interpersonal, psychodynamic, cognitive and strength base therapy as I believe that the
relationship
tends to be more important than "technique" and focus on where you are and what you need.
I understand the challenges, hopes, and fears you face in the process of seeking therapy. Our goal is to create together a safe atmosphere that will enable you to explore. At the same time, I look at underlying issues you may have and confront them in an empathic manner. In addition to private practice, I teach, write, and present locally and nationally. While I work with both women and men from many walks of life, my specialties include men's issues, fatherhood, sports psychology, working with executives, and diversity training.

Many of us don’t realize how events from our childhood affect the quality of our lives. You wake up most days feeling worthless, angry, fearful, anxious, insecure, and sad. These feelings negatively affect your behavior … you are unmotivated, impulsive, reactive, and take too many risks. These behaviors are negatively affecting every aspect of your life. Bills are piling up, you go from one job to the next, one
relationship
to the next, and may even be abusing drugs and alcohol.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
