I am also interested in working with twins and people troubled by their/others' involvement in cults or "high de mand groups".
I am particularly effective working with people who come to therapy with histories of childhood trauma, including emotional, sexual and/or physical abuse, and family neglect and/or abandonment. I have a strong commitment to helping men come to grips with the pains, conflicts and deficits in their work and relational lives. At the same time, I believe I can be particularly helpful to wo men, as a male therapist, in their work with these kinds of issues. I work primarily with individual adults. I have expertise working with a wide range of issues, including substance abuse/dependence, depression and anxiety.

Many of my clients are in the entertainment, legal, or business fields.
I've been an individual and couple therapist for over 2 decades. I work in a friendly, genuine way, creating a safe space in which to help individuals and couples feel better or deal with life challenges - relationships, work issues, low self-worth, or just "stuck." My specialty as a couple therapist is to be sensitive to the different styles of men and wo men, while both exploring underlying issues and providing tools for healthier communication. In all of my work, I use methods proven by research. For all clients, I believe people should leave therapy feeling, "This person really helped me."

My expertise lies in working with men transitioning into, or out of, relationships. Moving from single life into relationship with another is a daunting task. How do I maintain my own identity, my own authenticity, and still keep my partner happy? What are good boundaries? How, and when, do I say no? Equally difficult is the shift from partnership into single life. Who am I now? How do I keep a friendship with my ex (or not!) while moving into the dating scene? I've had great success helping my clients succeed and thrive during either of these challenging times.

WHAT WILL THERAPY BE LIKE? I strive to create an environment that is confidential and nonjudgmental. The therapy hour is a time and place where you can feel safe enough to do important work. I also believe that therapy can be enjoyable and life-affirming, even at times a FUN experience. WHAT CAN THERAPY ACCOMPLISH FOR ME? Engaging in psychotherapy provides the opportunity for a new start, an escape from ruminating, from feelings of helplessness and indecision. I will work with you to see and experience your situation in a new way - and take action to make important changes.

Specialty areas include hypnosis for pain management, anxiety, depression, and habit control.
People who see me for the first time are often feeling overwhelmed, confused, depressed or anxious. Some people are unable to sleep, have distressing thoughts, or cannot control troublesome habits and behaviors. Others have have struggled with chronic pain due to injuries or illnesses. Many have endured the stigma of having a major mental illness which created difficulties in daily functioning, mood swings, or poor judgement and distorted thinking. And others have functioned well with significant achievements in their careers, family, and relationships but still feel empty inside, and cannot experience pleasure, meaning, or fulfillment from their lives.

I believe people want to express who they are and pursue satisfying work and relationships, but have emotional and cognitive patterns that keep them stuck. These patterns often consolidate into a persona that leaves people feeling not quite themselves, with needs unrealized, feelings ignored, and potential unused. Symptoms of anxiety and depression, addictions, or low self-esteem, are often the only messengers trying to let us know that we are needing change. In a supportive and safe environment, therapy can help to bring these patterns into awareness and liberate needs to connect, create, and expand with fuller emotional support.

I specialize in anxiety, depressive/ manic moods, substance use, relational/family health, crisis, and sexuality.
Unlike psychiatry where medication is prescribed to prevent your feelings from being experienced, my practice is focused on understanding what our symptoms are telling us with the intent to implement personal change within ourselves and/or our environments. Professionally bringing our attention to psychological symptoms puts us in direct contact with conflicts we may not be aware of, which enables us to make conscious-informed choices.

I want you to have hope, that If you are feeling stuck in unhealthy feelings or thoughts or needing support through stressful life events, there are effective holistic strategies for finding relief and bringing you back into balance. Trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, grieving are all experiences of the body as much as the mind, and effective therapy should integrate both. Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
