I provide individual and couples therapy for a range of issues including relationship problems, anxiety and depression, and substance use issues.
I have maintained a private practice providing individual, couple, and group psychotherapy in the Los Angeles area for the last 21 years. Life is not easy, and sometimes it gets really hard. But the measure of success is how we cope with life's challenges.

My approach to therapy is characterized by a mixture of directness, playfulness, engagement, and nurturance. I believe that relentless curiosity and self-exploration leads to a sense of identity and purpose and an understanding of our place in the world.

I have significant experience working with stress, anxiety, body image issues, and substance use/addiction.
I am a licensed therapist who approaches therapy with a direct, strengths-based approach. I spent my life in New York before moving out to LA to do therapy. While here, I have worked my professional career in a diverse number of settings, including a neurofeedback clinic, rehab center, and LGBTQ center. I was driven to the mental health field because I genuinely enjoy working with others to train their brain and create a better future. I am also an industrial-organizational psychologist where my focus is on work-life balance.

As a behavioral scientist, I also conduct studies that evaluate mental health, trauma, and substance use interventions--this means I consistently apply the latest evidence-based methods to your treatment.
Psychotherapy can be a challenging and rewarding process. People often come to treatment to talk about what's wrong, but it is also important to talk about what's right. Each person has natural areas of strength we can capitalize on to increase coping skills, reduce distress, improve relationships, and develop a more adaptive outlook. With a collaborative approach that combines insight-oriented and goal-directed interventions, we will work together to create new pathways towards well-being.

As a psychologist, it is my belief that the therapy hour, the therapy relationship, is expressly unique. One that is devoted exclusively to you - where memories of the past stream into thoughts of the future and all is said in a protected, confidential space. Whether you are dealing with relationship or trauma issues, or seeking treatment for symptoms of depression, anxiety or substance use, the process of therapy can serve to clarify underlying feelings, reveal patterns - make the unconscious conscious. In doing so, therapy can enhance a person's sense of empowerment, enrich relationship experiences, illuminate the Self.

I find that adults can hold the impact of childhood trauma for years before seeking psychotherapy and often mask their pain with anxiety, depression, difficulties with vulnerability and substance use.
Is it difficult to trust others or your partner? Do you find yourself avoiding people or lacking energy to do the things you enjoy? Would you like a better relationship with yourself and others? I am cisgender LGBTQ affirmative therapist, my goal is to provide a sex positive environment for you to be authentically who you are, without judgment. During short term treatment I will provide you with tools to find practical solutions to your challenges.

Stuck? So often the first thing my clients tell me is that they're feeling stuck. Maybe they're stuck in a relationship or a job or a way of thinking. Often they've worked hard on their own to improve their situation, but still, they feel stuck. In my practice, individuals, couples and families find ways to get unstuck and to move forward once again.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
