Do you feel "stuck" with repeating cycles of painful emotions, thoughts, or behaviors that keep showing up in your life and getting in the way of how you would rather feel, think and behave? This stuckness shows up as depression,
fears
& phobias, negative beliefs about yourself, repeating relationship problems, inability or limited ability to perform something you want to do or stop doing something that is getting in the way of achieving the life you want. These and other problems can be resolved. You do not have to live with this "old stuff" getting in your way.

Though I consider myself a generalist and am happy to help with a variety or concerns, my areas of specialty and interest include
anxiety
, OCD,
panic
, health-related concerns, and peripartum issues.
We all have strategies for dealing with challenges day-to-day. But over time, many strategies can fall short or even backfire. We may find ourselves withdrawing and avoiding certain aspects of our lives, or overextending and pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion. This can leave us feeling anxious, depressed, and irritable and can also take a toll on our relationships and physical health. One of my goals as a therapist is to help you identify changes you can make, both big and small, and tap into your motivation to follow-through on those changes.

Therapy can provide a safe and nurturing environment where one can share
fears
and struggles without judgment, a supportive place to resolve and cope with life’s challenges.
There are times in our lives when we all struggle with fear and pain of one kind or another. Contacting a therapist can be fear-provoking in and of itself. Whether we are struggling with acute trauma or simply feeling challenged by facets of everyday life, we all occasionally long for empathy and guidance. Loss, depression/
anxiety
, addiction, even normal life transitional issues can leave us feeling powerless, frightened and lonely. Often we hesitate to share these feelings with friends or loved ones for fear of being a burden or worse, being judged.

Compassion is the foundation of my therapeutic work with all clients. It's important to me that you feel respected, cared for, and that you feel better. Challenging life situations, traumatic experiences, and/or dysfunctional family dynamics can cause all of us to feel distressed. Sharing your experiences, feeling validated and listened to, can decrease your emotional pain. Using a relational and client-centered approach, I can address your individual needs. Working together, we can find solutions and tools to help you make lasting changes that ultimately result in you feeling better.

We all come with different stories, identities, backgrounds, cultures, and representations of our experiences which make up who we are and how we relate to the people and world around us. Therapy is an opportunity to examine, understand, and process these parts in order to find our place in the world, establish healthy relationships, and feel a sense of joy and satisfaction in life. I am passionate about supporting adults and teens through life transitions, relationship issues,
anxiety
or stress related issues, processing traumas, and navigating existential or spiritual processes.

Did you know that 15 - 20% of women can feel symptoms that go beyond the ‘baby blues’? Overwhelming feelings of sadness, loss of identity, consistent worry, and scary thoughts are just some of the symptoms that you may be experiencing. However, help is available for the number one complication of having a baby - perinatal mood and
anxiety
disorders (PMADS). As of 2019, I am the first and only therapist in Pleasanton with extensive training through Postpartum Support International (PSI), focusing on working with postpartum women, partners, and their baby(ies).

I believe the goal of therapy is to engage life in a more positive and enjoyable way while improving a sense of self and deepening relationships with others. As a family therapist for 23 years, I’ve always enjoyed providing a supportive space for children, teens, young adults and families to better understand themselves and the struggles they face. Together we explore tools and build on skills that bring relief. In 2023 many families are dealing with multiple stressors. These stresses are compounded when they see their child struggling with depression,
anxiety
, social problems or school issues.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
