Emotional Regulation Therapists in Vista, CA
As a licensed educational psychologist, I am here to support individuals of all ages and their families. I enjoy helping adults (e.g., those seeking diagnostic clarity after years of misdiagnosis, masking, etc.) in addition to families with children. I have assessed children of various ages but have the most experience working with adolescents. I can help parents identify their child's unique strengths and challenges in addition to offering recommendations on how best to support them.

Mental health as an adult can be daunting even more so when we are trying to figure out who we are and what it means to "be yourself". From the start of adulthood, we barely become adults at 18 years old and we are thrust into the world of responsibilities and expectations of knowing who we are and what we want. On top of that we aren't given much guidance to help us achieve what others expect of us.
Thus, we are left navigating life with only the knowledge and experiences that have brought us to this point. Sometimes we've learned adaptive skills that work in any area of life but sometimes we learned skills that no longer serve.

You may be the woman surviving in “go mode” — appearing capable and high functioning on the outside while internally carrying anxiety, emotional exhaustion, relationship stress, unresolved trauma, or a constant sense of overwhelm. Even while managing daily responsibilities, you are stuck in patterns of overthinking, self-doubt, people-pleasing, or disconnection from yourself and others, despite deeply wanting things to feel different. EMDR therapy helps reprocess painful and overwhelming experiences, so you no longer feel emotionally stuck in the past, creating space to move forward.

"It's not forgetting that heals. It's remembering." - Amy Greene. My area of focus is working with women and men who want to heal their mind and bodies from negative or traumatic experiences. Forgetting is not always an option because our bodies do remember. Common symptoms and complaints that can be related to traumatic events may be anxiety or depression, irritability and anger, frequent headaches, stomach-aches and fatigue. It can be difficult and overwhelming to reach out for support, but "forgetting" may no longer feel like an option for you.

You keep finding yourself in the same relationship patterns—
overgiving, shutting down, feeling anxious… and wondering why it keeps happening.
You may feel disconnected, misunderstood, or emotionally alone—even when you deeply want connection.
Often, these patterns are shaped by past experiences or trauma that lives in the nervous system.
I help individuals, couples, and families heal these patterns at the root—so you can stop repeating painful cycles and start feeling more grounded, secure, and confident in how you show up in your relationships.

Many people carry their struggles quietly because they feel misunderstood, judged, or like no one is really listening. If you've spent years feeling like you have to hide parts of yourself or fit into expectations that don't feel natural, that experience makes sense. And it doesn't have to stay that way. I hold an MA from Azusa Pacific University (2017) and work with individuals ages 11 and up, including those who are neurodivergent. I believe your experiences truly matter, and that you deserve a space where you can feel accepted and understood.

The human psyche has an innate drive towards repair and recovery, much like the human body. Just as a cut on your finger naturally closes and heals when it’s kept clean and protected, our minds and hearts, too, have a natural capacity for healing when given the right conditions. This concept is the foundation of my therapeutic approach, and the starting point for my work with clients.

Some seasons of life feel heavier than others. A relationship that has lost its footing, a major transition that leaves you uncertain of who you are becoming, or a steady hum of anxiety that makes it hard to feel settled. These experiences are exhausting, and reaching out for support takes real strength. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University in 2023, and my path into this work began in inpatient settings, supporting people through some of their most difficult moments. I work with adults 18 and older, and I believe deeply in each person's capacity to grow, gain clarity, and feel more grounded.

Have you experienced betrayal or harm from your church or religious community? Have you been left to pick up the pieces by yourself? You are not alone. I work with adults who have experienced painful childhoods, relational abuse and religious trauma. These traumatic events often lead to perfectionism, anxiety, excessive guilt, people pleasing, depression, difficulties with self-care, poor boundaries, emotional disconnection or overwhelming emotions. The good news - it doesn't always have to be this way.

FAQ - Emotional Regulation Counseling
What are the signs that someone might struggle with emotional regulation?
Common signs that someone may struggle with emotional regulation include outbursts of strong emotion, such as anger or sadness, impulsive behavior, avoidance of difficult emotions, or extreme difficulty making decisions. People with emotional regulation difficulties may experience frequent mood swings or feel caught off guard by strong emotions. These experiences can affect personal, work, or school relationships, and may also contribute to or worsen mental health concerns.
How can therapy help with emotional regulation?
A therapist can help you understand emotional patterns and challenge automatic thoughts that may contribute to anger outbursts, impulsive behaviors, or other signs of emotion dysregulation. For instance, they may use worksheets, journaling exercises, or thought-reframing tools to help you identify triggers and respond differently. These activities often share the goal of creating more space between emotion and action. Over time, therapy can also help you recognize early warning signs of emotional distress before the emotions feel unmanageable.
Is emotional dysregulation a diagnosis?
Emotional dysregulation itself is not a diagnosis. Rather, it is a common symptom of several mental health conditions, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder (BPD), and certain anxiety disorders. Therapy that helps improve emotional regulation can also help reduce the symptoms of related disorders. Emotional dysregulation is also often linked to life experiences such as trauma or childhood neglect. In some cases, these experiences may contribute to emotional regulation difficulties and increase the risk of developing mental health conditions.
What therapeutic approaches can help with emotion regulation?
Two common therapeutic approaches used to support emotion regulation are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). CBT helps people identify negative thoughts and thought patterns, with the goal of developing healthier ways of thinking and responding. DBT is related to CBT and was originally developed for borderline personality disorder, though it is now used for many other concerns. Emotion regulation is one of DBT’s “core skills,” alongside other skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance. Both CBT and DBT are skill-based, meaning that sessions focus on specific skills to manage emotions, such as thought records and problem-solving skills. This makes them different from traditional “talk therapy” approaches, as they place greater emphasis on learning and practicing specific strategies that can be used in moments of high emotional distress.
Can children and teens have therapy for emotional regulation?
Yes, children and teens, as well as adults, can benefit from therapy for emotional regulation. Many mental health concerns first appear in late childhood or adolescence, so therapy can help identify what may be part of normal development and what may require additional therapeutic support. Therapy can also help children and teens build lifelong emotional regulation skills. Learning these skills early can make it easier to use them during stressful or difficult situations later in life.
