We live our lives in search of happiness, fulfillment, enrichment, and balance through our relationships, families, jobs and career. These areas can become demanding, stressful and even overwhelming. We face challenging situations of life transitions, grief and loss, family dynamics, trauma and abuse. As a result, we experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, and other moods. This is a good time to consider seeking professional help. The journey of psychotherapy can be challenging, yet it is often healing and rewarding.

Has trauma, loss or grief made it difficult to live the life you really want? How do you imagine your life changing or being more satisfying? My approach is respectful, encouraging and focused on growth. I'm trained in what are called "power therapies." EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and BSP (Brainspotting) have the potential to heal deeply, from within the brain and body, and create understanding and relief.

It’s been awhile since you can remember feeling genuine happiness or feel a sense of direction in your life. As far as other people know, things are going well and you have things figured out. But in reality, you feel isolated and alone because the things that keep you up at night are or from other people are difficult to express. Or the people around you are not equipped to understand what you’re going through. It may be an overwhelming fear of failure, managing parenting challenges, or managing expectations from your parents, or work.

Do you find it difficult to articulate how you're feeling but know that something feels like it's missing? Are you having difficulty accessing your passion or connection to life? The meaningful connection you are seeking may in fact be with parts of yourself. Many of us are secretly wrestling with inner complexities and feeling alone in the process, yet we do not have to be. My goal is to partner with you in a deeper relationship with yourself that results in a deeper presence to your life, an awareness of patterns that may no longer be serving you and forming relationships where you are being seen and loved for your authentic self.

With life and relationships comes vulnerability, and too often, pain and feelings of betrayal. These experiences can become defining factors in our relationships with ourselves and others moving forward, when not processed in a caring, self-compassionate way. Experiences of hurt, or even trauma, can leave us feeling small, lonely, and often with feelings of secrecy or shame. I work collaboratively with each client to help them unlock old patterns or experiences of pain to find more awareness about what is holding them back in their lives, and to move forward fully.

The path to living the life you want begins where courage and fear meet. When we are low in courage and high in fear we feel unsettled, busied, strained and eventually-void of hope. The thought that life will get better or that we will feel better becomes hijacked by the void. Our day to day begins to feel meaningless. This absence of meaning can be experienced as emptiness, sadness, loneliness, despair and misery. It can also be experienced as restlessness, irritability, avoidance, stomachaches, headaches and illness. These experiences drive our thoughts, beliefs, decisions and behaviors and can lead to mental and physical decline.

My approach to therapy is helping people explore thoughts, feelings and behavioral patterns between themselves, & our surroundings. Counseling will often be a guided process of how I can help clients utilize their coping skills & strength based tools that people may learn to employ immediately. Sessions are structured around evidence based techniques. I have extensive experience working with lgbtq+ issues surrounding gender identity & sexual orientation. I also have a background working with individuals, couples & families of loved ones dealing with various life changes, including depression, grief, addiction, & mental illnesses.

Anxiety Experts has offices in Santa Barbara, Montecito and Ventura, as well as virtual outpatient and Virtual Intensive Outpatient (VIOP) Treatment. Our team is specialized in treating anxiety, panic, social phobia, school refusal, OCD, PTSD, BDD, and disordered eating. These problems rob one's sense of freedom, confidence and self-worth. We treat these issues with a type of CBT called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), and Medical Nutrition Therapy from a Registered Dietician as appropriate. We have helped hundreds of adults and kids master their fears; research shows in-person and live video to be equally effective!

Finding a therapist that you connect with is one of the most important aspects of therapy. Even more important is learning how to identify, process and manage feelings with someone you trust. I would like to help you through this process, offer perspective and give you skills to work through it. I work with people that experience depression, anxiety, addiction, co-dependency, poor self esteem, relationship difficulties, and identity.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
