Sports Performance Therapists in Valley Village, CA
In 2012, Dr. Ron Kaufman leased his first BrainPaint® computer in hopes of overcoming career-ending pain. Two months later he was fully ambulatory. He decided to see what it might do for others. He helped a veteran overcome 35 years of severe PTSD, (his psychiatrist halved his meds, then halved them again). His two sons learned were able to discontinue their ADHD medications. Their cousins enjoyed similar results. Because of his successes with neurofeedback, Dr. Kaufman opened clinics where others could enjoy the benefits of psychotherapy and neurofeedback treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, chronic pain and substance abuse.

At times, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected, even when parts of your life appear steady or successful. Therapy offers a space to slow down and begin understanding not only what you feel, but why.
My approach is primarily psychodynamic, with attention to the underlying patterns that shape your thoughts, emotions, and relationships. As these patterns come into awareness, many clients experience greater clarity, a stronger sense of self-trust, and meaningful shifts in ways that once felt difficult to change.

Reaching out to a therapist can be a difficult step to take. I know the profound pain that can come with dealing with mental health challenges, including addiction...yours, or as a family member affected by another person's addictive behaviors. I understand how traumatic it feels to grow up with an addicted parent or an emotionally immature parent, or how it feels to be in an unhealthy relationship. These experiences can lead to devastating feelings - shame, abandonment, depression, anxiety, isolation, anger, & much more. I invite you to share your feelings in a safe & nonjudgmental space where you can feel understood & heard.

You may have built a life that looks accomplished from the outside, yet privately you find yourself carrying more than others realize. You may be navigating a leadership transition, questioning long-held assumptions, grieving what once was, or sensing that the strategies that brought you here are no longer enough.
Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, curious individuals seeking something deeper than symptom relief. They want greater clarity, stronger relationships, and the ability to remain present under pressure without losing themselves in the process.

You want to change your feelings, thoughts, or behaviors, but every time you try something different, it ends up blowing up in your face. (Not literally…hopefully.) How do you get unstuck from this pattern?! There are two main answers – at least, according to this clinician. By far the most important factor in your success in therapy is the relationship with your therapist. So my priority is teaming up with you on the best ways to achieve your goals. (Alternatively, if you don’t like me, just tell me to take a hike.) Next, what needs to happen is a disruption in the pattern of your brain’s old way of doing things.

I specialize in working with athletes in performance enhancement and sports injury recovery including traumatic brain injury.
Are you frustrated by making the same mistakes over and over again? You know what you should be doing when it comes time to perform but when it comes time you don't know how to do? Perhaps you've suffered an injury or a concussion that has set you back or you've seen other traumatic injuries on the field. Are there moments you feel like you'll never get back on track? Do you suffer from the yips? In the therapy I do, athletes can beat performance anxiety, increase performance confidence, get out of a near depression, and better recover from injury and concussions.

A lot of the men I work with are high functioning on the outside. They show up for work, family, and responsibility, yet internally, they’re carrying stress, anger, anxiety, identity pressure, or relationship tension they’ve never really had space to unpack. Many were taught to perform, not process.

Everyone deserves to feel secure, believe in themselves and achieve their biggest goals. But how do we get there? Especially when we experience events out of our control. For example: we don't get to choose the family we are born into, our own genetics that may leave us more vulnerable to mental health struggles or traumatic events that should have never happened but did. I provide a therapeutic environment to process, feel and cope with the things that feel too heavy to hold. Along with holding space there are also a lot of coping skills to help create change and begin living the life you want to lead.

How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.
How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.
How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.
What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
