As of April 2025, I am accepting new clients for both in-person work and teletherapy. I specialize in helping high-achieving professionals with anxiety, substance use, and related issues. My approach centers on shifting fundamental feelings and emotions and avoiding extensive intellectualized analysis of near-term stressors and personal history. I provide therapy that is focused, ambitious, and finite. I believe good therapy should start to work relatively quickly (in the first 2-6 sessions). If change doesn't start in that timeframe, we'll talk about what or who might serve you better.

I am Dr. Ann Susan Murphy, PsyD; I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, have an MFT license, and an MS in Sec. Ed, an MA in Counseling Psyc and a BS in Fash. Merch/Social Sciences. I can see the potential for true health in every individual and am positive and excited about each client I see. I believe in the power of the mind. I prefer Psychodynamic Therapy, as this gets quickly to the underlying cause, the real issue (s) blocking us from living to our full potential. Everyone needs to briefly uncover perceptions from the past and recognize how these perceptions can block us from living a balanced life in the present.

I am a Black female therapist and I specialize working with high achieving women. My typical client is seen as a strong woman. She can do all things and she takes care of everyone in her life. She rarely (if ever) asks for help. She is smart, hardworking, and exceptional. She is also exhausted, sad and lonely. She feels lost, broken and increasingly resentful of those she loves which makes her feel guilty. Sometimes she has thoughts of escaping her life. Sometimes those thoughts are dark which scares her. If this sounds like you, you don't have to keep taking on everyone else's problems while you struggle in silence. I can help.

I have provided therapy for individuals (children K-12 and adults), families, groups, and couple sessions for over ten years. My modality is Cognitive Behavioral which means we believe it is not the event itself but how we perceive and react to the circumstance that may cause a problem. We will explore different possibilities through our session and discover what may serve us the best in pursuing happiness.

Family and friends are worried and make comments about your use of alcohol or drugs. You get defensive, angry, and don't think there's an issue. You wish they would just listen and leave you alone. After all, you're not hurting anyone. To avoid confrontation you hide your use, lie, and isolate. Over time, your use has increased and you feel anxiety and depression more often.

People have a variety of reasons for "walking through the door" - you might know exactly what is going on, you might need help figuring that out, or you might just need a space of your own in this busy and quickly-changing world. I appreciate that not everything needs to be difficult in life for someone to desire or benefit from therapy. Therapy with me is more than just listening and nodding - my style is collaborative, and drives curiosity around the things we label as "problems." For some, this work can feel spiritual as they find greater meaning on why life is the way it is, and gain a sense of agency and more perspective.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
