Hi, my name is Carlo and my goal is to help individuals, couples, and families find healing, improve their mental health, and restore interpersonal relationships, especially with issues of grief, depression, anxiety, and trauma. In our sessions, we would explore the deeper root causes issues and work together towards healing and growth. Are you worried about something--or everything? Do you feel "stuck" and not sure how to get "unstuck"? Are you in a difficult place with your partner, or are you single and hating dating? Do you want a saner relationship with food? Are you intelligent and talented, yet feel dissatisfied? If so, I may be the right therapist for you. In a safe, supportive setting, you and I look at your current situation and focus on YOUR goals--not on what others think your goals "should" be.

Psychotherapy is an individualized service to help someone in an impasse in life. Anyone may get stuck in efforts like: a young child in school, a student with academic challenges, an adolescent with identity questions, or an adult dealing with career choices or trying to maintain an intimate relationship. Each person is unique, so that we will first spend some time understanding you, developing trust, and establishing initial directions for our joint efforts. Therapy may vary in length, depending on what your concerns are: a few sessions, a few months, or more extended if to your benefit.

As a psychologist, I allow the space for individuals to gain insight and growth in their lives that help them reach their goals and aspirations. We all encounter challenges, whether it be someone suffering from anxiety and depression, a family who just found out their child has a medical issue, a child with fears, or a teen who has been bullied. During these unfortunate times what is needed is someone to connect with and help you out of this dark cave of distress. One of my greatest strengths has been the ability to connect with others and reveal the ways through this emotional distress.

You might be struggling with your relationships, self-esteem, or feel lost as to where you're headed in life. You want to move through whatever is holding you back from living a life filled with meaning and connection, but can't seem to shake longstanding patterns that get in your way. I see therapy as a relationship oriented towards your development. I seek to understand your unique world, and develop a relationship together that enables a new experience of yourself. Through the process of learning deeply from your experience, we can work together to change it.

Are you looking for a therapist who is sex-positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, poly-friendly, and kink-knowledgeable? You’re tired of feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, and stuck in patterns of people-pleasing or perfectionist thinking. You wish you could tell your partners what you really need. You want to feel better about yourself, and embrace the parts of your identity you’ve been hesitant to explore or acknowledge because you fear how others might judge you. You’re ready for change, and you deserve a supportive, non-judgmental place to make that change happen.

People often reach a decision to begin psychotherapy because they feel that they have been struggling with or trying to ignore some behavioral or emotional difficulty and have reached a point where they want this to change. Such difficulties begin to affect other parts of one’s physical or emotional life, thought patterns, relationships, and work. Often the consequences of such struggles coupled with ineffective coping strategies, leads one to feel helpless and hopeless. This is a critical point where change is needed.

Journeys Counseling provides professional psychotherapy, vibrant living coaching, and spiritual direction to the community. Our work is interdenominational, serving clients from many different backgrounds, including those who have little or no religious affiliation. As a Christian organization we believe counseling should address the whole person and be respectful of people’s faith. Individual’s beliefs are both an important part of their lives and a valuable resource when experiencing distress. Counseling should assist in developing those resources further. Often, people lack support systems that help deal with personal problems.

Sometimes, when faced with many of life's challenges, we can find it difficult to reach out. Often fear or shame get in the way of asking for help. But there is hope. Working with a therapist, you can begin to feel validated and discover that you are not alone. Do you have a fear of abandonment or fear of intimacy? One or the other can mean you're either a Love Addict or Love Avoidant. I can teach you how to love yourself instead of looking for it in someone else, and bring down your walls and be relational.

Do you get stuck in repetitive arguments with your partner, even when you are talking about something seemingly small? You try your best to reach for your partner, but you both end up feeling so disconnected. You know you two fell in love, but some days you just don’t feel like your partner understands you. These moments of disconnection leave you feeling misunderstood, hurt, frustrated, and alone. You aren't sure about how to connect more with your partner. You want things to be different, but you don't know how to get there. You feel at a loss. You want badly to stop having the same fights and to work on healing, truly healing.

Beginning therapy can be intimidating, and I provide a comfortable, safe place to begin the process of self discovery and growth. I consider therapy to be a tool for finding and overcoming obstacles to a fulfilling life. I have worked in mental health for over 20 years, and I have extensive experience working with adolescents and adults with eating disorders, grief and loss, depression, life dissatisfaction, and relationship issues. I believe emotional well being is just as important as physical health, and psychotherapy can be an effective way to feel healthier and more satisfied with your life.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Walteria, Torrance?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
