I treat anxiety and
OCD
in teens and adults using a user-friendly cognitive-behavioral approach.
As a clinical psychologist, I help individuals who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression, and loss. I teach my clients to practice what I call "the reverse golden rule": treat yourself as you would treat others! We are often so critical of ourselves, while with a friend we would be kind, supportive, compassionate. My 20+ years of experience have given me the tools to work using an eclectic approach that I tailor to each client. I offer a comfortable, safe environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, where you can feel heard, understood, and validated.

I allocate my time and practice between two specific and unique issues: one being sexually related problems, the other being
OCD
. With sexually related issues, they can show up as relationship problems, infidelity, arousal discrepancy, or LGBT matters. Likewise, with
OCD
, there are many different forms and subtypes: harm, scrupulosity, contamination, sexual, symmetry/order/balance/just right. I am trained and experienced in both fields, utilizing tools and interventions to treat one or the other, and sometimes both.

Treating
OCD
and anxiety disorders require specialized training and experience.
Do you feel controlled by anxiety or
OCD
? Feeling like you have to constantly seek reassurance or perform rituals to feel better? These disorders operate on what is called a Vicious Cycle: 1) encounter trigger/
obsessive
thought 2) experience distress 3) engage in compulsions or safety behavior/s, which leads to 4) relief. The frustrating part about this cycle is that the relief is short-lived. Before you know it, the
obsessive
fear and compulsions are back, taking up more time and mental resources to cope. The good news is that together, we can end the cycle and find long-term relief.

I have spent the last decade passionate about evidenced-based treatments for
OCD
& Eating Disorders.
I am an Associate Therapist at Dr. McCurdy-McKinnon & Associates: Eating Disorders Clinic, specializing in disordered eating and
OCD
. Many folks seeking my support may have been struggling in secret for a while, experiencing uncertainty, or believing they "should've" figured it out themselves by now. Typically, my clients face a lot of future worry, have fears of judgement or failure, and cannot seem to turn that self-critical voice's volume down. Importantly: I am anti-diet culture, fat positive, weight inclusive, HAES-alligned. I am LGBTQIA+ allied, neurodiversity affirming, and committed to equity, inclusion, and anti-racism

I practice each intervention through distinctive situations my clients may experience when living with trauma and mental health which can develop symptoms of depression, anxiety,
obsessive
compulsive disorder, and co-occurring addictive disorders.
Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression, and anger when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

Diagnosis I have helped clients with are anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation,
OCD
, grief and loss, life transitions, gender identity issues, chronic illness’/chronic pain, substance use disorders, and so much more.
My role as a therapist is to create a safe space for clients to discuss their mental health concerns. I view therapy as a collaboration between the therapist and the client and strongly believe that the client is the expert of their own life. No one can know you better than you! What I can do is help to guide, introduce healthy coping skills, help clients challenge the negative thinking patterns they may be experiencing, create a safe place for clients to process traumatic life experiences, etc. As a therapist, I take a client centered approach and strongly believe in meeting clients where they are.

How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
