Maybe it's hard to feel like you're enough. You've been taught by family, culture, and society your whole life that everything from your body to your place in the world is always up for critique. So now you shrink, hide parts of yourself that you've been taught to reject, and move through the world wearing a mask. You might struggle to speak up for yourself and neglect your own needs. Low self esteem, self doubt, perfectionism, impostor syndrome, people pleasing and all these harmful internalized messages you've been carrying feel like shackles you've been forced to wear, don't they? And you're ready to break free.

Reaching out for help can be scary but it's also very courageous. Congratulations on taking the first step. It would be my honor to work with you. In individual, couple, or family sessions, I work with my clients to create inner and outer peace using evidence-based modalities. I believe that the healing journey is about creating awareness of our already existing inner resources and adding more to our resource toolbox so we can live our best life. I often work with clients facing life transitions, conflict, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Together we discuss how to increase positivity and find confidence in one’s own abilities.

Over and above familiarity with approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness, my formal training covers two somatic disciplines ( Somatic Experiencing and Bioenergetics) along with Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), an evidence-based approach that aims at deep change as well as symptom relief.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist with a diverse background that cuts across a variety of treatment modalities and philosophies. Our therapy will be collaborative, tailored to your goals and needs. We can work together to change persistent self-defeating patterns and facilitate personal transformation as well as to address specific challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship issues, career changes, divorce, and major life transitions. In addition to my private practice, I am a professor at Stanford University, where, among other duties, I teach classes aimed at psychological, career, and life development for law students.

I view therapy as a means of deepening self-knowledge, part of which involves recognizing the messages your body sends you. Well-versed in the language of the body, I facilitate the process of reintegration—learning to listen to what your body has to tell you, translating these messages, and using the information from your somatic experience in your decision-making process. While I enjoy the conversational component of therapy, I structure our sessions to incorporate mindfulness. I believe we can achieve greater mental health and well-being when we slow down enough to notice our patterns, both behavioral and physical.

So in our work together, I utilize various postmodern therapeutic methodologies, particularly narrative, relational & somatic therapy, to help make sense of what's real for you now, build greater awareness & empower you to envision new paths for yourself on your own terms & in alignment with your unique values.
How are you feeling? Right now, in this moment. Overwhelmed & stuck? Perhaps a little lonely? You aren't alone. You're probably so busy taking care of the people in your life that you have not stopped to check in with yourself. What might it look like if you were getting the care you need? If we don't check in with ourselves, identify what it is we really want, build the framework to make that our reality, create & uphold boundaries, say yes & just as importantly, say NO when we need to, our bodies will do it for us in various forms we all want to avoid (burnout, mental & physical fatigue, illness, etc.).

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
