Alcohol Use Therapists in Stanford, CA
As a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of experience, I integrate evidence-based approaches with a compassionate and collaborative style. Together, we’ll explore both the “why” of your struggles and the “how” of creating meaningful change.
Therapy should be a safe and supportive space where you can show up as your full self-struggles, strengths, and everything in between. My role isn’t to “fix” you, but to walk alongside you as you move toward clarity, growth, and relief from patterns that no longer serve you. Here, you don’t have to hold it all together - you can slow down, reflect, and focus on what you need.

There is an old saying that in the course of every human life, one encounters 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows. Whether we consider ourselves young, old, rich, poor, famous or not, we all are equal in our fundamental experiences: no matter who we are, we experience birth and death, love and heartbreak, joy and despair. I see my role as a therapist as helping my fellow humans deal with the inevitable losses that come with living, be it loss of an identity, loss of self-worth, loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, loss of joy. Even just the thought of future loss can be painful, leading to persistent anxiety and worry.

Many of my clients are professionals, caregivers, creatives, and high-achieving individuals who have spent years prioritizing responsibility, achievement, or the needs of others over themselves.
I specialize in working with individuals in established recovery who are looking for deeper therapeutic support beyond early sobriety, as well as partners, family members, and loved ones impacted by addiction.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
