Life has its measure of joys and sorrows. In our modern society, it’s all too easy for the ‘sorrows’—stress and unhappiness—to outweigh the ‘joys’ in our lives. Maybe it’s our situation at home or an unfulfilling relationship. Perhaps our health took a downward turn or we lost our sense of purpose in a meaningless job. Life can place mountains in our path and our old ways of coping often stop working. But no matter how lost we feel in the bramble, we are capable of untangling ourselves and finding our way back to the light—to peace.

For forty years I've helped North Bay families, children and adults through my pre- and post-grad internships, my private practice and my contract with Sonoma County Child Protective Services. My style is client-centered and non-judgmental. I let my clients' stories unfold naturally, allowing them to tell them in whatever way feels safest. I'm a huge fan of common sense, realistic expectations, the importance of life as a series of experiences and "the big picture." My role is to support and guide my clients through difficult times. Daniel Hughes' PACE informs my approach to therapy: Patience, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

I'm a therapist who believes in meeting people where they are, with honesty, curiosity, and a non-judgmental approach. Therapy isn’t about giving advice or fixing you, but about creating a space to explore your experiences, understand your patterns, and move toward a life that feels more true to you. My approach to therapy is kind, compassionate, and grounded in the belief that people have more wisdom and strength than they often realize. I work collaboratively, helping you notice what’s already working while also gently (and maybe from time to time not so gently) challenging patterns that may be getting in the way.

Aloha, I'm Phillip My name is Phillip Jones and I'm a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Hawaii. Over the years I've worked with young adults, couples, middle-aged and our elders going through life transitions, amidst the crises and opportunities of life. My passion is helping people to find their calm and strong inner identity and move into the next phase of their life, career, or relationships with confidence in themselves and their personal strengths. I find that depression and anxiety are very prevalent in our society, and often are the foundation for other emotional and behavioral health issues that arise.

When we recognize something in our daily lives or relationships isn’t working or feels ‘off’, or we’ve hit a ceiling in our growth, psychotherapy can be a powerful, transformative process and journey to explore, experience, and express your whole self, free of judgement.

I have a passion for working with adolescents & adults who struggle with depression, anxiety, suicidality, low self-esteem and codependency. I adhere to a Person-Centered counseling approach which means, therapy gets to be all about you, where you are valued and you can say what’s on your mind without fear of judgment. Therapy is a process that takes time, effort & a willingness to be vulnerable and self-reflect. But the biggest predictor of success in therapy is having a good relationship with your therapist, so why not give me a call for a free consultation.

You’ve handled a lot on your own for a long time. You learned to stay productive and push through, yet while you function on the outside, inside there’s tension, anger, or a sense of watching life from the sidelines. Many men I work with don’t call it "trauma"—they just know something isn’t working. Relationships feel strained, and isolation feels safer than connection. The constant pressure to be responsible and self-reliant has become exhausting. You feel disconnected from yourself and others, and you’re not sure why. Let's move you from just functioning to actually living.

At some point in life you may be faced with stresses, fears and doubts that make it difficult to see the path ahead. As you confront these challenges, talking to a professional can offer the chance to be heard and helped without judgment. It can be a source of perspective and ideas to help cope with worry and stress in your relationships, family, career, school, or the many transitions we experience in the course of our lives. And it can be opportunity for genuine encouragement and support.

It can take time, effort and courage to call and arrive at a therapist's office. There is the apprehension of what this experience will be like, especially if it is your first time, or perhaps if you are trying again after a previous unsatisfactory experience. After you make the call, and once you begin, there is hope. And that alone is enough to sustain you while you work toward self-understanding and/or improved communication with your mate or children. The investment is worthwhile. The relief can be profound.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
