It takes courage to understand the need for healing. My mission in psychotherapy is to help you learn how to help yourself. It should be emphasized that psychotherapy is far from "one size fit all." Therefore, the art of change in psychotherapy is achieved through a thorough psychological assessment in order to apply the precise remedies to your specific challenges. As a result, healing is often achieved by re-conceptualizing your past and presence, but most importantly is to improve your outlook on the future. I have been practicing as a psychologist for 26 years, on three continents.

To read more about my work with gay men and lesbians, see my website: MARSTONJAMESLMFT-LATHERAPY.
I assist individuals & couples in learning to address their inner life through an approach that helps work with "unfinished family business" from childhood that shows up today as unstable/conflictual relationships, depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. I bring over 21 years of experience working with individuals of various self-identities who seek to address either short-term issues/conflicts or desire to work on a deeper level psychologically. I specialize in working with gays & lesbians, though my approach is ideal for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, who seek a more authentic lived experience.

I combine many powerful modalities, including Jungian inner work, neuroscience, fitness, career, and spirituality, but I will carefully tailor my approach to honor your unique needs and possibilities.
Love. Joy. Ecstasy. Awe. In my 18 years of clinical experience, I’ve discovered that we each have far more capacity for these expansive feelings than we often realize. Whether you are contending with many challenges, or feel ready to fly through the stars, I can work with you collaboratively to shape a life that fulfills your highest dreams, and maybe even soars beyond them. I’m eager to share what I’ve learned about our abilities to break out of old patterns of pain, fear, and shame into fruitful creativity and communion with the most inspiring aspects of being alive.

My approach to working with you in therapy would encompass all registers of your experience, including non-verbal communication, the body, and the mind. In my way of working, developing an understanding of where and how feelings are actually felt is as important as understanding cognitive distortions and negative thought patterns. I listen to every which way you communicate. Psychotherapy can be used in myriad ways, short or long-term. Often when distressing symptoms have abated, psychotherapy shifts to become something more deeply self-reflective and meaningful.

I help men and couples get unstuck in their relationships. As a man you may be struggling to feel and communicate your emotions, while simultaneously living with a great deal of stress. You may avoid conflict in order to not rock the boat. Self-doubt and an inner critic keep you feeling like you don't know where you're going (personally and professionally) and like you're never enough, leading to burnout. You want to feel confident, connected, have clear purpose, and to relish that thing they call joy. If you're a couple, we will work towards similar feelings of secure functioning. I want you two to feel safe, light, and powerful.

You feel pain in many ways: worry, shame, anger, confusion, and sadness. Your past taught you how to respond to these feelings, but problems arise when these responses no longer work. Our first goal in therapy is to understand why you feel and act the way you do. Awareness doesn’t bring change; it brings choice. I focus on emotions because they communicate what we can’t yet speak. Listening to our emotions gives us the power to help ourselves. When you understand yourself, you can make better choices to get what you need. Please see my videos on emotions, vimeo.com/392071078 or motivation, vimeo.com/389807247.

It is my belief that it's of the utmost importance for the modern therapist to be as flexible, versatile, and multiculturally competent in the clinical setting as the modern man or wo man must be to contend with the stressors of today’s fast paced world on a day to day basis.
A former professional athlete turned clinician, I received my MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. During my time in practice, Ive had the opportunity to work with a diverse client population ranging from 15-50 years of age, addressing a wide range of presenting problems in the clinical setting including but not limited to: Depression, Anxiety, Life and Career Transitions, Relationships, Men's Issues, and Trauma. As a Los Angeles native, I understand the stressors of living in the city, as well as our need to have someone to process it all with in a safe and non-judgmental space.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
