I believe that therapy begins with an invitation. When clients share information in sessions, they are inviting their therapists to see the parts of them that might be too embarrassing, painful, or scary to show anyone else. Even in a space without judgement or criticism, it can be hard to take that step. To reduce the fear of being judged, I am to work collaboratively with my clients, highlight their strengths, and help them reach the best solutions to their problems.

Is this you? All we do is fight! It seems like we never hear each other and neither of us listens anymore! It is so frustrating I do not want to come home and try. I have been successfully helping couples to develop the tools necessary to communicate effectively for more than 20 years. Having disagreements is not unusual. Learning how to resolve disagreements is a key element to healthy relationships. Conflict resolution is about learning to fight fairly by listening in an atmosphere of Respect, Trust, Safety and love and not placing my desire to be right over the relationship. $185 per 50-minute session.

My name is James Sode and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with 20 years of experience working as a mental health professional. I have a Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. My approach to providing therapy is eclectic, however, I find the most effective treatment approach is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) which examines the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life.

You haven't been feeling your best. You might be feeling exhausted, anxious, down, worn out or on edge and it's taking its toll. You may have thoughts and feelings that feel out of proportion to the situations of your day-to-day life. Perhaps you've recently experienced a major stressor like a car accident, and you just haven't been yourself since. Who do you turn to with all of this? Family and friends may not know how to help, and it can be isolating to be going through this without professional direction or support. This is where therapy comes in.

Life brings uncertainty at one point or another. It makes you ponder — who am I? What do I want? Why do I feel this way? The burden we carry is complex due to the layers of challenges and experiences we deal with daily. It is okay to not be okay. It is okay to be doubtful, confused, hurt, or stuck. Therapy is an opportunity to seek answers and take the first step towards living life to the fullest; the life you envisioned.

I work with high-potential, creative and sensitive beings, who may feel stuck and burned out. I've discovered personally how somatic therapy revitalizes the organism and resolves psychological and health issues at the source. In particular it can shift anxiety, chronic pain, depression, loneliness, and imposter syndrome. It works to restore the nervous system to a state of healthy regulation, energy, flow and feeling at home in your body. This provides a foundation of authentic self-esteem that becomes the basis for a meaningful career and a network of healthy relationships—a life that feels great on the inside.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
