My name is Charles Jones. I go by Cass. For thirty years I have worked as an Addictions and Marriage & Family Therapist. I began my career working in recovery programs with addicts, alcoholics, and their families. As a Program Director with Los Angeles County, I worked with foster children and at-risk youth. I led the Hospital Diversion, Emergency Response, and Wraparound teams. The majority of my career has been in private practice in the Pasadena-Sierra Madre, CA areas. I find great satisfaction teaching children and adolescents to heal trauma and gain coping techniques and skills that can help them to become successful adults.

We have all felt it at one time or another. Lost. Alone. Uncertain and hesitant. Less than. The life that we want is just out of reach. In the modern world greater connectedness often rings hollow and false. We want to be connected. To be seen. To be known, deeply, authentically, for who we are in our core. We weren't born to feel the way we do, but for something more. Something better. Something we can achieve together.

I have been practicing as an LCSW for the past 7 years and much of my focus has been with adults who are dealing with addiction, depression, and life transitions. I enjoy utilizing creative solutions to help work with the problems my clients are facing. I find this promotes a more interactive conversation, providing the opportunity for fresh perspectives and inventive brain storming as a way to get our neurotransmitters firing. The more collaborative and conversational our sessions, the better chance we have to get you closer to the place you want to be in life.

Traumatic events overwhelm our capacity to cope and lead to profound changes in the brain and body. Trauma can lead to feelings of self blame, shame, and isolation. Due to a fear that the world is no longer safe, people develop ways of protecting themselves. These defenses, while once helpful, often negatively impact the way one functions in their job, school, and relationships. Thankfully, we all have within us a fundamental need to flourish and thrive.

You’ve done everything asked of you—worked hard, kept your emotions in check, and played the part expected of you. Yet inside, you feel anxious, disconnected, and quietly wonder: Is this really all there is? For many men, the pain isn’t loud—it’s buried beneath frustration, worry, numbness, or shame. You might overthink every little detail, constantly fear what others think, or feel nothing at all, just drifting through life. The drive that once pushed you forward now simply wears you down. You’re tired of hustling for a version of manhood that no longer feels like you.

There can be moments in our life where we are overwhelmed with the struggles we are experiencing. We can feel lost, confused, hopeless, stressed, depressed, stuck, worthless, embarrassed, ashamed, angry, the list goes on. Perhaps, you think that you can’t move on, things will never change, nobody cares, or you're all alone… If you can relate, I understand why you’d want these unpleasant thoughts and feelings to disappear. It can be dreadful and exhausting living with this weight on your shoulders.

The most fascinating and important part of my job as a therapist is how to have a really good conversation. It may sound too simple, but it cuts to the heart of what to expect from therapy. Through good conversation, you experience connection and understanding. When we are understood, difficult feelings change with resulting freedoms to engage life. Trained both as a Marriage and Family therapist and a psychoanalyst, I work with complex relationship issues, divorce and blended families, depression, anxiety, addictions, men's issues, and sexual trauma recovery, and integration of psychology and faith/spirituality.

My clients are sophisticated, insightful, and curious about themselves and others. Yet they may have found themselves feeling chronically depressed, anxious, or lost in life, and they might struggle with long-term patterns in their lives and relationships that they just can’t seem to change. Perhaps they have struggled with trauma or other experiences, thoughts, and feelings they fear nobody would understand. I enjoy working with people who desire not just new insights into their mind, but also a new way of experiencing themselves and others.

While their resilience may have resulted in successes, they find themselves overwhelmed and disconnected by stress, worry and hopelessness, struggling with transitions, challenges in relationships, identity, and an injured sense of self. Based in both personal experiences and formal credentials in Creative Writing and Psychology, I bring my passion for using words and inquiry to cultivate connection, insight and growth.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
