Are you struggling with debilitating thoughts that make you anxious or depressed? Or finding yourself in a difficult life transition or crisis? I love helping people going through challenges to feel better, learn to cope better, and know that they are not alone. I value guiding and empowering clients dive deep into their experiences to gain insights that target and heal problems at their root. I may use EMDR, CBT, mindfulness, and a psychodynamic perspective (exploring the impact of your childhood and hidden aspects of yourself on current challenges), and will cater the therapy experience to your unique needs.

Traumatic events overwhelm our capacity to cope and lead to profound changes in the brain and body. Trauma can lead to feelings of self blame, shame, and isolation. Due to a fear that the world is no longer safe, people develop ways of protecting themselves. These defenses, while once helpful, often negatively impact the way one functions in their job, school, and relationships. Thankfully, we all have within us a fundamental need to flourish and thrive.

There are times in life when the challenges you are facing pile up. You feel stuck and you don’t know how to get unstuck. The anxiety or sadness you feel becomes too much to manage on your own. Or perhaps, you are navigating a life transition; such as starting a new job, leaving home, becoming a parent or processing the impacts of a diagnosis such as ADHD and/or Autism. Whatever specifically brings you here, I am so glad you are seeking support. I am passionate about providing collaborative, trauma-informed and relational therapy to teens, young adults, and adults.

Are you at a crossroads? Throughout life, we experience "little deaths" that change our life’s course. Loss of a dream, health, family, the earth we stand on, job, marriage, relationship, country or beliefs can suddenly take us over a threshold, chosen or not into a new world where life no longer makes any sense. Our old tools and ways of coping or understanding our self or our world are no longer enough to pilot us to the other side of what can feel like a vast, deep and turbulent river. While often terrifying, these are the golden opportunities in which our true nature, our soul or purpose in life can be revealed.

Another silly argument! One more sleepless night wondering “Why did I say that to the person I love?” Another night sleeping on the couch because my emotions took control of my mouth? It is so frustrating to have the same argument over and over and over again. Trying to make him hear my caring heart but all he does is back away. Always looking for a place to calm down but she keeps coming with no break. If they would just listen to what I’m feeling, things would be so much better. I’m so tired of conflict. We used to connect so easily. What happened to those people we used to be? Can we ever find our way back to each other?

Seeking help is a courageous step toward real change. My clients often find that my authentic curiosity and compassionate exploration help them uncover the “knots” in their personal, relational, and professional lives—leading to greater clarity and transformation. If you feel stuck in your relationships, unfulfilled despite professional success, or disconnected from yourself, therapy can help you move forward. Perhaps the ways you’ve coped in the past no longer serve you, leaving you wondering, “What’s wrong with me?” or “Why does something still feel missing?” but the real question might be, “What has happened to me?"

The connection by an understanding, intuitive professional, someone with wisdom and effectiveness, who also respects the time and the cost of your investment is valuable. I have enjoyed a rich 25-year career as a trauma informed specialist. I have supervised and directed programs in public and non-profit sectors. I am known for working well with individuals who are shy and who may be fearful of entering therapy. I have a specialization in the diagnosis/assessment and treatment of AD/HD and learning disorders such as dyslexia. My therapeutic approach is primarily cognitive behavioral. Pragmatism describes my approach to treatment. Management of chronic mental illness, and adjustment issues relating to ethnic/cultural/generational and religious issues are also areas which I specialize in. I believe that at times addressing questions pertaining to meaning in life can be as important as changing behavioral patterns and emotions.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
