I also work with teens and adults across cultures who struggle with low
self esteem
, finding themselves due to life transition, and loss.
Navigating modern times as a teen and adult is challenging especially coming from an immigrant family. My firsthand experience in that realm has allowed me to specialize in supporting those trying to balance self-identity with old traditions. I believe therapy is a collaborative relationship and my approach is to meet you wherever you are reaching from. Through compassion, patience, and direction I hope to guide you to a space where you find a peace mind and greater love for yourself.

My name is Danielle Matthew. I am a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (38708). I learned at an early age the importance of empathy and thinking of others. Over twenty years ago, I entered the medical profession because I wanted to help people who were experiencing emotional pain. I help adolescents, adults, couples and families who are in pain due to issues such as anxiety, severe stress, low self-esteem, or depression. Along with my private therapy practice, I am the founder of The Empowerment Space and the co-founder of CPE Collective.

So much of what we experience in our early life impacts who we are as adults. Whatever barrier or struggle you may be experiencing; I am here to go through this therapeutic journey of self-understanding in order to build on the strengths you inherently have and to achieve a life of resiliency and fulfillment. A motto I live by is “Hold the vision and trust the process.” It can be a hard decision knowing that you need support and seeking it out. For that I am grateful that you have taken this step in getting the support you deserve.

Many of us have stories running through our head that dictate how we live our lives. I work with people to identify their stories and teach them to challenge how they’ve always thought, and how they’ve always done things. Indeed, I frequently tell my clients that I’m not in the relief and comfort business. Rather, my purpose is to provide people with the tools to experience joy and happiness.

On the outside, you make success look easy, though it comes at a cost. You hide parts of yourself leaving you wrestling with anxiety, self-esteem, or shame/guilt. Through my supportive and calm nature, I work to offer a safe space that recognizes the duality within yourself, so you can move closer to your authentic self. I enjoy and have success helping clients improve communication, understanding emotions, and create a healthy relationship with themselves and others. "(Humans) will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing (their) own soul(s)." - Carl Jung. I am looking to work with people who are ready to do this work. I want you to have a meaningful life, as YOU define it. If you don't know what you want, I hope our work together will help you find that. If you know what you want but keep running into the same obstacles, I hope to help you understand what those obstacles mean and show you how to work with them more effectively.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
