Here at Sorell Therapy, we utilize a healthy blend of compassion and confrontation techniques in a warm and supportive environment to help clients work through their personal challenges. Erica Sorell provides customized treatment programs to build a therapeutic rapport with her clients. I specialize in issues related to grief and loss , living with chronic or life-limiting illness, caregiving, depression, anxiety, and the daily stress or challenges encountered as people progress through key life transitions.
In times of personal crisis, it is natural to feel overwhelmed, alone, and disconnected from friends, family, and even yourself. When your usual strategies for "snapping out of it" are no longer working, you may feel stuck, irritable, fatigued, or generally disinterested in activities that would normally bring pleasure or meaning to your life. Ironically, it is often during your most vulnerable times that you also have the greatest capacity for healing and renewal. I believe in the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for positive change - even in the darkest of times.

I work with adults and couples, focusing on issues of anxiety, depression, loss , and artistic struggles.
When we live a life of reflection, we open ourselves to the rich depths of life's possibilities. We move away from the needless suffering of unresolved pain. I help my clients examine the intricacies of their minds and relationships in a warm, supportive, nonjudgmental environment. I help them make sense of their lives and their histories to understand how they impact their current challenges. Together we build a refuge where strengths are discovered and life becomes more joyful. My training is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, however, my style always depends on the needs of my clients and the relationship we create.

Most people looking for a private therapist value a safe comfortable space where they can talk with a trained professional and take a look at what who they are, what they've been through and where they're headed in their life. You may be in transition, maybe starting or ending a significant relationship, want to get your relationship back on track, or have come to a point in your life where you want to grow and develop in new ways. You may have some past trauma holding you back, or have had a significant loss that challenges how you see yourself going forward.

I work primarily with adults and teens who are experiencing depression, anxiety, panic attacks, grief , self-injury, low self-esteem, relationship issues, gender dysphoria, psychosis, and life transitions.
Most people come to me when problems have become unbearable. They feel alone and stuck and powerless to do anything about it. They come in hoping I can tell them what they need to do to feel better. I provide support and guidance so that my patients do not have to bear their struggles alone. We work collaboratively to understand what is not working and why. We examine past patterns of experience to help us to understand current feelings and behaviors. By addressing the underlying issues that are creating problems, we can create lasting change and transformation.

The loss feels empty, hollow, and consuming. It feels like a permanent and empty space is a part of you. And figuring out how to breathe, how to go about your day, and how to just do life - feels impossible. You feel disconnected from so many things around you and aren’t sure how to keep moving forward. The support others are showing you is kind and caring…and at the same time, it feels like nothing is helping. You start to think it’s going to feel this way forever and you will never feel better…but you will. And a part of you, deep down, knows that you can make it through this.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
