The irony is this--if you don't go in, you can't find out." I love this quote from a Richard Stine greeting card. It's such a succinct description of the therapeutic process. I believe people are relational by nature and our earliest experiences of home,
family
and friends influence the expectations we bring to future relationships. Our experiences shape us but don't define us. Telling our stories helps us clarify what we want to keep and to change, a choice we didn't have as children. While change can be challenging, it can open up a whole new world of possibility.

Your
family
deserves support. Challenges that arise in childhood can impact one’s mood, how one copes with stress, and identity formation. Similar issues can arise for parents who may be experiencing this role for the first time, impacting one’s ability to bond with their children. Early intervention can support children as young as infancy to promote healthy functioning into adulthood as well as support parents who may be experiencing difficult feelings related to their own history.

I work with individuals, children and others who affect or are affected by a dysfunctional
family
dynamic.
Many clients assume their marital relationship will be monogamous and free of major conflict. When they find their expectation are not met or an extramarital affair does occur-- the result is betrayal, anger, and depression. I teach couples how to "fight fair" express their feelings and thoughts, and understand and hear each other in order to accept one another's strengths and flaws without compromising their own needs. Knowing what causes the breakdown in the marriage can actually help strengthen the relationship.

I am extremely passionate about my work, I grew up in a
family
of psychoanalysts, so my life has been immersed in the workings of the mind.
I have been working in the field of psychology for 25 years. My personal nature combined with superior training allows me to help people manage the complicated array of emotions that naturally occur among all of us. My post-doctoral training strengthened my ability to work effectively with children and their families, in addition to helping couples and parents. I will help you understand yourself, your relationships, so that you will be able to manage your feelings as opposed to experiencing that your feelings hold you hostage. It is then that you will feel more alive and more connected to yourself and your surroundings.

Helping cultivate the ability to say what you need to say to partners, children, friends and
family
with love and empathy, so that you can be heard.
As individuals, we are so unique. We all come from very distinct backgrounds and life experiences, both of which impact our decisions, choices, desires and fears. These considerations all play a role in the struggles and pain we face. Looking at these areas of our lives and trying to understand their influence can be overwhelming and scary. For this reason I strive to create a safe, warm and non-judgmental environment where, together, we can explore collaboratively. This time together will allow you the space needed to evaluate your experiences and understand how they affect you and your relationships.

Are you locked in patterns of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, insomnia, infidelity, mood or thought disorders? As an empathic therapist, I utilize EMDR within a

systems approach. My life's work is helping people uncover and target problematic patterns. Once patterns are uncovered, we take simple steps toward change. If you struggle with ADHD, Asperger's or learning differences, I would like to help you construct the right niche, where you can be successful and happy, feeling supported and understood. Changes made in therapy are rewarding. I want to be part of your change process.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
