I have been involved in men's wellness for many years and feel that I have something to offer both men and wo men in in the crucial task of gender healing.
Look at birds: they make great sky circles of their freedom. How do they learn to do that? They fall, and in falling, they are given wings. -Rumi ...In the course of being hu man, we all face losses and traumas of different degrees and in the process, find ourselves abandoning parts of ourselves in order to survive emotionally and interpersonally. Therapy is about reclaiming those parts and finding our way home to who we truly are.

I welcome the opportunity to help professionals work through difficulties in personal, familial and professional challenges, including dealing with major crises and transitions. My education (Yale, UC Berkeley) and decades of experience have prepared me to help diverse individuals cope with a wide array of problems. I'm now working exclusively via video sessions. I have extensive expertise working with healthcare workers, including psychotherapists. My work with you might be short-term, or it may evolve into ongoing work if that is warranted.

REST YOUR MIND -OPEN YOUR HEART For over 25 years I have been both a LMFT and a Buddhist meditation teacher (see OccidentalLagunaSangha.org), but I work with clients of all beliefs. I bring mindfulness practices, focusing therapy, depth psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy and lots of life experience to my work with clients. Clients often bring depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and life transitions to our work. Together with empathy and compassion we explore what cuts us off from being more fully present with our lives.

Life was never meant to be fair - just ask the wildness of nature. Life is filled with joy and sadness; love and grief. This is part of being hu man. How do we find purpose and meaning in life? We're born with a unique gift; we're wounded by life. Our core wound lies beside our unique gift, our purpose. Our responsibility is to give this gift to our family, friends, community. This underlies all of my work with you as we peel back the layers: what is it you bring to us? It lies beside your deepest pain, regret, what frightens you the most. Our work together is to change your relationship to that wound so you can give your gift.

My training is based in Hu manistic Existential Psychology, CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
I have been in the mental health field for over 45 years. During that time, there is very little I haven't been exposed to. I teach in the Counseling Department at Sonoma State University which keeps me current on the latest in the psychotherapy world. I have supervised Trainees and Associates as their Clinical Supervisor. Supervising other Clinicians helps me become the best Therapist I can be. Despite all my years of experience, I remain a lifelong student because to be an excellent therapist you need to stay humble and curious.

So what is it that’s owning you right now? I am interested in what feels most alive at any given moment. I believe that the client has the answers to their own issues locked away inside them, and the job of the therapist is to help them to gain access to those answers. I believe in approaching the experience playfully and with a childlike sense of curiosity, and have found this attitude to achieve the greatest results. I also believe that the client has a right to feel all their feelings, even the ones that have previously been labelled 'bad', in order to help them develop a full spectrum of emotional intelligence.

Much of philosophy today contends that modern life is damaged life. Theodor Adorno tells us that this life is wrong and cannot be lived rightly, while Walter Benjamin observes that, in terms of our structures of feeling and knowing the world, “we have become impoverished”. Adorno and Max Horkheimer suggest that magic died long ago. Wrong life, poverty of experience, and the death of magic: how then can we live? This question animates my thought as psychotherapist and educator. Over two decades of clinical practice have taught me that damaged life can be beautiful life, capable of the most radical kind of joy.

My main approach to counseling is establishing a collaborative, strength-based, and goal-focused relationship. I believe we all have the capacity within ourselves to address roadblocks in our lives, heal from emotional wounds, and move towards growth and contentment. We also all feel stuck at times along the way and can use a little help. I work alongside my clients on identifying clear goals to strive for and by which to measure success. I highlight my clients’ strengths and areas of progress during this work, as a large part of that feeling stuck is the harsh perceptions we tend to have about ourselves.

I am proficient in the use of EMDR, clinical hypnosis, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the Hu manistic-Existential paradigms.
There is nothing quite like emotional pain. We carry it with us everywhere. It messes up our life. Sometimes it makes us want to hide from other people; sometimes from ourselves. Sometimes we turn to various escapes to quiet that insistent feeling in our bodies. We look to one solution after another until we learn to mistrust every solution. And we are right. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, there isn't even a one-size-fits-all question. You are unique, and only you have the answer. My role is to help you find it.

I bring an eclectic skill set of many different therapeutic approaches and orientations so that I can use different techniques to find the best tools and interventions to help and support whoever I am working with.
I enjoy supporting individuals who feel misunderstood or marginalized. I like helping people gain a better understanding of themselves and their patterns and how understanding themselves better can lead to positive changes and improved satisfaction in life. I find working with trauma, neuro-diversity, and relationship issues fascinating and I have a strong passion to help others.

I believe the mind knows how to heal. Given the right conditions, our own wisdom guides us back to what makes us feel alive and whole. Therapy can be one of the conditions we need for healing. By becoming familiar with what blocks us and aligning with what we value and love, we begin to untangle the past and create the life we want.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
