We often seek out therapy in the harder moments of life. These moments leave us feeling broken or stuck and can emerge as a result of anything from challenging personal relationships and life transitions to systemic oppression. I view my work as a therapist as an opportunity to enter these places with my clients—finding beauty in the shadows and guiding you back to remembering your inherent wholeness.

I work with adults experiencing a wide variety of issues: relationship issues, romantic as well as difficult parent dynamics, career stress, life transitions, pandemic stress. I have speciality working with PTSD and Substance Use Disorders, and PMS/PMDD. My practice is informed by trauma research in the neurobiological processes involved in healing, which privileges addressing present day struggles over re-telling and risking re-living the difficult or traumatic past. We reference the past enough to address its impact on the present. My practice is guided a by a commitment to social justice and an anti-oppression framework.

I think therapy has a lot to do with the "art of conversation" and how we relate to one another. My goal as your clinician will be to hear you, understand the world you live in and support your efforts to improve your sense of self, life-functioning skills and overall happiness. I use acceptance, empathy and compassion with my clients, emphasizing how their current strengths can support them when facing difficulties and challenges in their lives. I encourage my clients to be the experts in the room and work to support, guide and aid them toward happier and healthier lives.

Today, I encourage you to consider an alternative future. One where you are at peace with yourself. Where the light and dark within you are both accepted unconditionally and you remember who you were before the beliefs that currently limit you were formed. I strive to help others separate themselves from their problems, including significant symptoms and behaviors. You HAVE a problem. YOU are not a Problem. For the last 15 years I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and their families. Ready to dive deep and make a change? Let's talk!

Life can be difficult. You don't have to go it alone. My approach is engaged and practical, with the goal of meeting you where you are. My work is grounded in the belief that the relationship between therapist and client is the foundation for therapeutic change. With couples, I incorporate the work of Sue Johnson/EFT, Dan Wile and The Gottman Institute. Prior to working as a therapist I enjoyed an extensive career in the business world. In Sonoma County since 1993, I hold an MA in Counseling Psychology and a BS in Business Administration. Grounded. Collaborative. Creative. Respectful.

Are you a woman who feels like something's missing in your life, or in you? Do you tend to put your needs last or minimize your problems? Maybe you're hard on yourself too. And you've been pulled off balance by: stress, anxiety, self-doubt, depression, grief, life transition, relationship struggles or career/life dissatisfaction. I counsel and coach women just like you through challenging and confusing life passages and difficult times. I'll help you reclaim the wise, empowered woman within and also encourage you to see yourself as worthy and good enough. The result: self-compassion, self-belief, deeper connections, more aliveness.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
