I have received additional training and experience working with clients who have the following issues:
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (
PTSD
);
Drugs and Alcohol Addiction;
Domestic Violence;
Sexual Abuse; and
Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples.
Welcome. If you are feeling lost, struggling, overwhelmed or currently facing a painfully difficult time, I can help. Experiencing emotional pain and struggling with life issues are part of the process of living. Yet, when we find ourselves stuck in patterns, situations, or relationships that continue to be painful, we ask “Why can’t things be better?” or “What is wrong with me?” and eventually “Can I ever feel happy?” Often these are the issues that propel us to seek therapy. Emotional pain can show up as anger, fear, grief, confusion, anxiety, exhaustion, procrastination, etc. I believe, for change to occur, safety, empathy and respect are essential. I have come to experience an increasing sense of sacredness about our work together. It often takes courage to walk through the therapist’s door for the first time. As healing begins, I am reminded of the resiliency and courage of the human spirit.

Willow Tree Counseling’s therapists are trained in sex addiction and betrayal partner
trauma
.
Sex addiction impacts the addict and their partner. Sex addicts may experience preoccupation with sexual thoughts, hide sexual behaviors or activity from others, have sought help for problematic sexual behaviors, feel controlled by their sexual desire, feel depressed after sexual behavior, or notice others have suffered due to their sexual behavior? Partners of sex addicts may experience shock, intense anger, fear, and/or pain about their partner’s sexual behaviors, experience unexpected drops in sexual interest, feel like they are on an emotional roller coaster, or notice that past
trauma
keeps coming back and impacting them.

My approach is positive, strength based, and collaborative. In addition to talk therapy I offer EMDR and expressive arts, for you to access your feelings and intuition more directly. Difficulties in mood and relationships often stem from unprocessed
trauma
, or from unhealthy patterns learned in childhood. Although therapy can't change what happened or did not happen in your past, it can work to alleviate your pain. When therapy is working well, it increases your capacity for peace, love and joy.

I developed and co-led an exposure based
trauma
program for 8 years and co-led groups focused on divorce and women's issues for 13 and 15 years respectively.
Therapy is about a relationship. It's about your relationship to yourself and finding ways to move out of stuck places. I want to get to know you and help you know yourself better. I'd like to help you find some tools to help yourself. Non-judgment, awareness, acceptance and willingness are characteristics I'd like to help you develop. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, divorce, work stress,
trauma
and codependency. Creating a safe space for you to look at your issues is my goal.

I use experiential and integrative approaches such as Brainspotting, and EMDR to resolve the effects of distressing past experiences (
trauma
) & internal blocks.
You may feel overwhelmed by the desire to make changes but don’t know where to start, or even what you need. As a therapist, and fellow human, I know how complicated, stressful and confusing life can be. Painful past events can leave us defeated and disconnected. Major life transitions can be overwhelming. Depression & anxiety can rob us of vitality and mental peace. In my work, I strive to create a welcoming space that allows you to feel encouraged, understood, and capable of positive change. My sessions with clients are often peppered with moments of humor, gentle directness, and deep realness.

I specialize in working with children and teens and their families, who have experienced
trauma
and/or are suffering from various symptoms of anxiety, depression, ASD, ADHD, and/or externalizing behaviors.
I believe that the relationship between client and therapist is the foundation in order for any healing to happen. Trust and mutual respect is important for progress to be made and I spend time getting to know the client and what brings them in. The client is the expert on their life and their experiences, and I feel privileged to be the witness of that journey. Most of the people I work with are children, adolescents or young adults, but I also enjoy working with women and adults in areas of transition, family issues, relationships, parenting or looking for support or personal growth.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
