Becoming a mother is a transformative experience. While pregnancy and motherhood can bring immense joy, that joy can also be coupled with feelings of worry, sadness, overwhelm and self-doubt that can feel hard to express to others. If you are experiencing this, you are not alone. The transition into parenthood causes a tremendous shift in our lives.

Therapy can be a scary journey to embark on, or possibly a taboo, depending on your culture. As a Hispanic woman, who once was a single mom, and now having a blended family, I have experienced many challenges. I have felt lost and thought no one understood me, and though some days are still harder than others, I have been triumphant and regained a sense of control in my life. People come to me when life circumstances have become too overwhelming and no longer know how to regain control of their life. I have worked with diverse populations: race, age, gender, multiracial, single mothers, perinatal and postpartum , to name a few.

Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be a joyous, fulfilling time for some women. For many others, it is riddled with feelings of depression, anxiety, and confusion. These stressful emotional experiences can be unexpected and unfamiliar, or they can be a return of past symptoms; whatever the case, they interfere with a woman's ability to function and experience daily fulfillment. As a Psychologist and member of Postpartum Support International, I aim to instill hope in women who are suffering that these symptoms are temporary and treatable.

I also offer specialized services for prenatal / postpartum women, and therapy to support parents and young children age 0-5.
I believe that our moments of greatest struggle can also hold the most potential for growth and self-discovery. By giving ourselves a supportive space to explore the places that feel painful or stuck, we open ourselves to a wealth of information about our deepest desires, strengths, and wisdom. This makes it possible to live with greater self-compassion, freedom in our actions, and ease in our relationships. Whether you are navigating a significant life transition, suffering from anxiety, depression, or trauma, I am dedicated to providing a safe and respectful space to embark on this journey.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
