I work primarily in two modalities: one, using a mindfulness -based way that focuses on assisting the client to notice what is happening to them emotionally in each moment and two, an in-depth approach to "dig deeper" into the client's psyche in order to arrive a deeper understanding of one's self.
In my practice, I attempt to address suffering: what makes us suffer, how we suffer, and how suffering can be alleviated. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with life issues and are not afraid to take on the suffering consciously, with my support, in order to transform their lives. I specialize in the treatment of addictions of all kinds, but primarily chemical, co-dependency, sex and romance, and gambling. I also specialize in the treatment of trauma/PTSD, both from current life situations and from childhood experiences.

I primarily utilize a somatic/ mindfulness /attachment-based approach.
I believe we all have the ability to change and grow. I work with Individuals and Couples who want to improve their lives. Trauma can keep us stuck in dysregulated emotional states. Isolation can make change difficult. Life transitions can be hard to navigate. Communication with loved ones can be challenging during conflicts. Abandonment and other relationship injuries are best healed in a relationship with a safe and secure person. As you contemplate creating change, you may find yourself in need of help and support. If you find yourself stuck and in emotional pain, collaboration with a therapist can begin your journey to healing.

Research shows it is possible to change our thinking patterns and relieve distressing symptoms using tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness and EMDR, which is a specialized approach for trauma.
Everyone has the potential to change, learn and heal. As an attachment focused therapist, I create a safe space for clients to explore themselves and their challenges and find a different way. Our attitudes and beliefs impact our mood and lives. That's good news! It means we can learn to do things differently and become more resilient.

I can help you build self-compassion through mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral skills and practices, so you can recognize your own thinking and emotional patterns.
Are you curious about your own moods and patterns? Have you always wanted to understand yourself better? Do you feel that you could feel so much happier if you had new or better coping skills? My approach to psychotherapy is to use my years of experience working with people who are open, eager to learn and who are craving a life that is more fulfilling with less worry, self-disparagement and suffering. I draw on family systems theory, CBT, humanistic psychology, Buddhist mindfulness , nutritional psychology, and trauma work including EMDR, and the body-mind connection found in EFT (tapping).
Proactive counseling for body, mind and spirit! With more than 30 years of experience, I combine a range of modalities in a supportive counseling atmosphere that combines elements of life coaching with deeper reworking of old patterns that no longer serve. I am a highly interactive therapist, who will give direct but caring feedback about changes you may wish to make in your life and obstacles standing in your way. I believe that one key to success is breaking behavioral change into bite-sized, manageable increments so the client is not overwhelmed and has the opportunity to enjoy consistent success.

I have a somatic and mindfulness -based orientation, so our work has the potential to go deeper than talk therapy.
I am here to help you listen to the signals of your body, mind, heart and relationship that are calling for a new way of being. Often these signals come in the form of conflict, sexual blocks, loneliness, depression, anxiety, addiction, grief; I believe they are an initiation. Something is out of sync: you know all the "right" things to do, and yet they still don't seem to get to the heart of the problem. You are beginning therapy because part of you knows it would be more uncomfortable to continue "business-as-usual" than to open to change.

I use emotionally-focused therapies emphasizing mindfulness to help clients know and understand themselves and their partners.
Just as the speed of technology has rapidly increased and expanded our lives, so has the urgency of people to resolve their life challenges and move quickly through transitions. Here are some of the transitions we may face during our lives: the loss of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, becoming parents, caring for aging parents, beginning new careers, leaving home for the first time or deepening our spiritual lives. I gently guide people to quickly transform these challenges into opportunities to grow and achieve personal goals, in a safe, warm and accepting environment.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
