Therapy for Men's Issues: You shut down, get defensive, or lash out when uncomfortable things come up in your relationships. You don't want the drama. But you know something feels off and wonder, "What am I missing?" You'd like to understand yourself better, so you aren't so confused about developing and maintaining relationships and having emotional intimacy. You're tired of being labeled as insensitive, guarded, or acting "hot and cold." At times, life feels empty, alone, and without purpose. You did the things you thought would make life happy and successful, but there is still a void in this area of your life.

Between my life experience and my years of clinical work, I bring a broad depth of knowledge to my work as a therapist. This helps me to better understand and help my clients with the dilemmas they bring. I combine a non-shaming atmosphere with careful listening, and then bring forth tools and knowledge for them to use in their life outside the therapy room.

Couples that want to build a better relationship by solving problems from the foundation of love that brought them together. Men who have reached mid-life and seek to live fully the next part of life . People who will invest the time and money it takes for positive change.

Many of my clients are strong, capable individuals who still find themselves struggling. They may have trouble expressing their emotions, which affects decision-making, asserting their needs, or setting healthy boundaries. This often leads to feeling disconnected—from themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Some think their problems aren’t "big enough" to ask for help and feel guilty about seeking support, while others believe they should be able to handle everything on their own. Does this resonate with you?

As an uncritical witness to my clients’ lives, I offer the necessary support, reflection and guidance for clients to access the parts within themselves that are needed for change. Having someone truly witness your life can mean the difference between just feeling bogged down and stuck, and actually experiencing growth and seeing change take place in your life. I have been providing psychotherapy to teens, adults, couples and families for 25 years, and in private practice for the last 15 years. And, in that time, I have seen the collaboration between therapist and client create remarkable change.

I believe that being understood by someone who is compassionate and knowledgeable is essential to becoming the best person we can be. We can be our own worst critics and sometimes it helps to have someone experienced alongside us in our journey. I am a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience in working with teens and adults who have a wide range of issues. I specialize in treating issues related to addiction and substance abuse.

Are you especially hard on yourself, finding it difficult to prioritize your own needs? Or perhaps you are striving to express your voice and find a deeper sense of confidence and belonging. If you find yourself feeling unmotivated, directionless, or unclear about your purpose, it would be my honor to hold space for you. I also have a particular knack with helping adolescents who are acting out or struggling with school, relationships, or mental health.

People seek the services of a therapist for a variety of different reasons.  If you are seeking therapy because you are suffering (for any reason) and feel motivated to find a solution for your suffering, and are capable/willing to be introspective, honest, focused, and committed to your own healing process, then I can help you.  I work well with clients who are willing to challenge their old defensive views of their lives.

What is most important in therapy is that you feel deeply supported and understood. Finding a therapist who shares your LGBTQ+ identity is one less obstacle to being understood. My approach to therapy is collaborative and interactive, where we work together to reach your goals in a safe and supportive environment. Together we can find new ways to uncover your strengths and resources and make changes that leave you more balanced, happy, and authentic. My style is warm and curious and I seek to create relationships attuned to each client.

You deserve a welcoming space where you feel valued, understood, and capable of positive change. As a therapist, and fellow human, I know how stressful and confusing life can be. Painful past events can leave us defeated and disconnected. Major life transitions can be overwhelming. Depression & anxiety can rob us of vitality and mental peace. Great healing can happen through safe & genuine connection to another. Sessions with me are peppered with moments of humor, gentle directness, and deep realness.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
