I specialize in treating childhood trauma, anxiety,
depression
, and life transitions.
Many of my clients are people who despite their successes, still find themselves saddled with a fierce inner critic. They may struggle with feelings of anxiety, or low self esteem. Sometimes people begin therapy with me because they feel disconnected from their passion and purpose in life or they wonder what holds them back from having more satisfying relationships. With help
you can learn how to feel calmer and tame the critic. By paying skillful attention to your feelings we will uncover the blocks that keep you from being fully engaged, allowing you to reclaim your zest for life.

I provide guidance towards building trust and balance, by forming a growing alliance with you. Together, we find a pathway to renew your mind/body/spirit connection. We access your inner resources, to create a unified sense of self. If you are experiencing
depression
, anxiety, fear, isolation, anger, trauma, we pay attention to these signals. We meet vulnerability with a gentle rhythm, so the heart can release these emotions. Our intent is to nurture a relationship to yourself, based on self acceptance, honor and respect. Our focus is to create a feeling of safety within yourself, security in the world, and an opening to wholeness.

Brainspotting is the neuro-experiential modality developed by David Grand, PhD to heal trauma. A trauma is any experience that causes emotional or mental distress, whether as a child or adult. Trauma overwhelms one's resources at the time of occurrence. In defense, the brain compartmentalizes the trauma, so that you can move forward in life. But there is a price to pay for compartmentalization: unexpected reactivity, unhealthy and failed relationships, dysfunctional coping strategies like substance use, anger,
depression
, anxiety, isolation and confusion. Through brainspotting, the trauma can be located, integrated and healed.

Many of us reach points in our lives when we feel anxious, overwhelmed,
depressed
, or just generally unhappy. Making the choice to go to therapy can be a difficult decision. However, once that choice is made, it sets the healing journey in motion. With this one decision, you will have the opportunity to explore those places within yourself that need tending in a caring, supportive environment. My practice is guided by the idea we sometimes need support, and by working collaboratively we will find the tools and insight to build a foundation for a more productive and satisfying life.

Life can bring
depression
, anxiety, discouragement, self doubt - many kinds of suffering.
I enjoy working with couples. The areas of upset often are a map, pointing us to possibilities of potential growth. Your difficulties can become a catalyst for increased intimacy. It's easy for any couple to get off track in efforts to communicate - slipping into blaming or power struggles, rather than your true communications, which can bring you closer and into deeper intimacy and trust. My job is to work together with you to help you develop skills that help reclaim happiness - communication skills, skills in understanding yourself and your partner, skills for building and rebuilding the life you want .

“The will to be oneself is heroism.”

Coping with
depression
, anxiety, habits and addictions that undermine your life, relationships that cause more pain than joy--these are the challenges that I have helped people overcome for over 35 years. Sometimes these problems are rooted in the ways you adapted to a difficult childhood. Sometimes their solutions depend on skills that you have not yet acquired. In either case, you long to have a place where you feel safe and accepted for who you are, a place where you can freely discuss personal, even shameful issues without recrimination.

My specialty is working with the symptoms of stress,
depression
and anxiety with the goal of reducing these symptoms and improving the quality of your life.
I think that life is really about the relationships in our lives. Our earliest relationships were with our parent and/or caregivers. Siblings, friends, teachers and co-workers are added as layers upon layers. Seeking intimacy is a rite of passage. How we navigate the transitions in life with those relationships affects our whole being. I believe that therapy is about better understanding who we are first and then we can relate to others in a more healthy, well rounded way.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
