I have extensive experience with addictions/
codependency
, including adults having grown up in a family with addiction (affecting current day functioning and relationships).
The first and most difficult stage of change is asking for help. Contemplating change is often harder than taking the actual steps in that direction. Most people are pleasantly surprised with the relief and energy that comes from beginning! I will walk you through your beginning and answer any questions you may have about the process of counseling and psychotherapy. I am licensed by the Board of Behavioral Sciences as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Feel free to call or email with any questions you may have. I look forward to talking to you.

In my years of experience treating trauma, substance misuse,
codependency
, relational issues, & other mental health challenges, I've seen the shame, self-blame, confusion, frustration, loss, & hopelessness that come with difficulty coping. For some people, it can be frightening & difficult knowing how to support loved ones who are having mental health challenges, whether it is a parent, child, spouse, sibling, or friend. I recognize a desire to feel safe, understood, & to develop better coping skills that help with overcoming challenges & restoring self-esteem, confidence, meaningful relationships, well-being, & grace.

I am guided by the principal that the deeper we can look into ourselves, the deeper we can see into the world - by understanding ourselves, we can understand how we are limited - once we know where we are hung up, we can make more adaptive and healthier choices - we can craft the life we prefer to live. In my work with clients, we often uncover long-held family patterns and dynamics that come from histories of addiction, abuse, toxic shame,
codependency
and trauma. These patterns become increasingly dissatisfying and uncomfortable to live with. I am here to help.

My work as a therapist is grounded in trauma-informed, feminist, and attachment based principles that highlight the importance of safe and trusting relationships. I am here to provide attuned feedback and guidance as you navigate sex and love, anxiety, grief and loss, the ongoing effects of childhood trauma, unlearning
codependency
and strengthening or softening boundaries. My goal is to help you develop tools for self-awareness, resiliency and intimacy building, and conflict resolution. I believe deeply in the power of healing work, and the great courage it takes to turn inward, to turn toward pain, and to face and love ourselves.

Sometimes it's time to make a change and deepen our understanding of ourselves and others. Therapy can be quite helpful in this process through providing a safe, non-judgmental relationship from which to grow. I've been in private practice for over 20 years and I work with adults, couples, adolescents, and children from 5 years old and up. I would like you to know that you are not alone in this journey of growth and healing. I would like to come along side you as you improve and deepen your relationship with yourself and with others.

When I work with the pain of depression, anxiety, fear, isolation or trauma, often my clients' inclinations are to resist it, to stuff it, to pretend it's not happening or to judge themselves for these seemingly intrusive feelings. What if these emotions are surfacing because your mind and body wisdom are giving you the signal, through these experiences that your attentiveness and compassion are being requested? I believe that emotions arise to move through and to assist us in growth and well-being. They contain important messages of wholeness. It is a privilege to witness your unique expression as an individual.

I hold a deep and abiding belief in the inherent health and wellness in each of my clients and my work is to guide them to rediscover this core sense of aliveness, agency and resiliency. In addition to my clinical training in psychology, I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Mindfulness Educator. I have integrated traditional psychotherapy with cutting-edge, body-based modalities that address childhood developmental issues and Complex Trauma. I create a safe environment in which to renegotiate learned survival strategies that, while needed at one time, compromise our ability to connect with ourselves and others.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
