Informed by ecotherapy and
mindfulness
practices, I help people tap into their innate curiosity, engage more fully with life, prioritize leisure time, and improve health and well-being.
Do you feel like there must be more to life? Do you feel stuck, frustrated, detached, or uninspired? Work, caregiving, or other life stressors have you feeling burnout? Somehow, despite the persistent demands on you and your time, you feel bored. You feel drained and exhausted but can’t sleep. You are working so hard but feel increasingly cynical about the impact of your efforts. Maybe you can identify the kinds of things you'd like to do, that next professional step you’d like to take or that healthy habit you know will make you feel better, but are having trouble acting on those desires.

I bring my years of experience with holistic psychotherapy, sex therapy,
mindfulness
meditation, non-duality spirituality, somatic movement practices and eco-spirituality to my work with you.
We live in an inter-connected world. Our old models of rigid individuality and self-reliance are failing us now, not addressing our deep innate need for belonging, for purpose, for awe and transcendent pleasure. At this time, we need a capacity for processing intensity, a range of emotions from grief to ecstasy. And the planet needs us to be awake to it, in our full authenticity and hope. I believe being present to our inter-connection is key to living a fulfilling life. This opening to awareness will bring new questions, new boundaries, new paths to explore. Are you feeling a calling for more intimacy with all that is?

Part of my practice includes the use of
mindfulness
to help clients to make the connection between the mind and body and help decrease anxiety and depression.
Seeking therapy can be the first step on a healing journey and I hope to walk alongside you as you pursue personal growth. I believe that therapy can be a great way to access some of the tools that are already within us but that we may need help employing. I understand the importance of intersectionality as a queer Black woman and therapist and can understand how necessary it is to acknowledge the impact of intersecting identities when working with clients. I use an integrative approach to help clients feel empowered to re-frame their narrative and identify and process complex emotions.

I trust your capacity for moving toward healing, change and growth. My holistic training in applying
mindfulness
to trauma and anxiety can allow you to experience a new relationship with all the parts of yourself and with others, which helps you feel more at ease. As a somatic psychotherapist, I use a mind-body approach to help you compassionately discover unconscious patterns in your nervous system, body, and mind that keep you from living your life as you wish. Somatic-based therapy has you deeply listen to all parts of yourself, which allows access and support to places in you that talk therapy does not reach.

I practice
mindfulness
in the session which helps me pay close attention to subtle details that may serve as messengers and guideposts.
The majority of my work has been centered around the neurobiology of trauma, and early attachment experiences that form and shape relationships, beliefs, feelings and behaviors in the present. Some common challenges and themes are relationship difficulty, depression, loneliness, anger, anxiety, self loathing and shame. Some clients come in with clarity, but most just know they are struggling and aren't sure where to begin. My job will be to create the environment and provide the tools to help us uncover, explore and integrate the unconscious and conscious parts of the psyche.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
