Throughout our lives, we encounter a variety of natural transitions, some of which challenge our ability to cope. Death, divorce, life threatening illness, career change, marriage, becoming a parent, spiritual or existential crisis...to name a few. In an attempt to adjust, many of us experience emotional distress. I would be honored to work with you to provide support. I enjoy working with people of all ages including young
children
and teens. Through talk therapy, expressive arts, sand tray, and engaged play, my goal is to make each client feel prioritized, heard, cared about, valued, and nurtured throughout their process.

Blending conventional and alternative approaches I empower
children
, adolescents, and adults to reach their therapeutic goals. It is my belief that all
children
, regardless of age or race, speak their own unique language based on their unique life experiences. This language expresses who they are and what they need in order to live a more functional and productive life. My mission is to interpret that language and offer innovative strategies that foster positive growth and maturity. It is not only a challenge to change, grow, and learn. As a member of the human race, I feel it is an obligation!

Children
teach me about their world through play, words, and feelings.
Hello there! In my work, I take the journey with clients, walking with them during times of difficulty and discomfort until they're able to discover more peace and stability within. I have specific training in trauma, mindfulness, and play therapy. I have experience working with specific traumatic events such as: grief, divorce, abuse, family life events and exposure to substance use and domestic violence. Whether I am working with
children
, adolescents, or adults, I create a safe space for clients to grow, discover their own inner strengths, and foster deep healing.

This is also the process that I utilize in
children
's, family and couples therapy, while incorporating how attachment issues affect relationships, and communication skills.
Do you get the feeling that there are parts of yourself that are blocking you from the life you want to live? Do you feel like you over-react to common things? Do you sometimes feel that you just can't get past your past? I offer an opportunity for you to change how you see yourself. Challenges can be seen as opportunities for growth. Aspects of the self and experiences that are feared can be understood as windows to greater wisdom. Through this healing, past wounds are seen as openings for understanding to grow.

I use play therapy techniques to help
children
and their families process emotions, work through change, heal from traumatic experiences and dream up new and daring ways to be in the world. Why play therapy? It works! This evidence based practice creates an ideal environment for growth by allowing
children
to engage their whole brains. During play a
child
is relaxed and can begin to express themselves in ways they can't through language. A pretend dragon slayed in the office becomes a dragon slayed in real life. Play therapy allows both your
child
and you figure out what's really going on inside of them and how to help.

For the last 20 years my clinical training and experience has been focused on family system dynamics,
child
development, teen and adult substance use, and increasing healthy communication.
The work you and I will do together is focused on your goals and needs and capitalizes on your strengths. My assessment process takes into account the biological, psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural aspects of your life. Once that assessment is completed, you and I will explore the issues and needs that you are trying to manage by utilizing a "motivational interviewing" approach. We then work to discover the maladaptive behaviors and coping mechanisms; and explore healthy, productive, and strengths-based strategies for getting these needs met.

I also work with little darlings,
children
4-12 years of age and their parent's concerns about their
child
’s behavior, academic performance or family and social functioning.
Where do we go when we are in a stuck pattern that repeats itself almost magically again and again in our relationships, at work, our parenting and dulling our creativity and spirit against our fiery will, wearing down our confidence, fortitude and hope? Or maybe you are in the wild eyed middle of change or in need of one that is painfully long overdue, but you just-can’t-seem-to-fully-step-forward. I specialize in working with adults to heal all the way. Yep, heal all the way-big or small traumas and patterns that can feel like an elephant on your chest or shoulders.

At the time when a family reaches out for psychological assessment or psychotherapy for their
child
, the situation has become difficult for those in the
child
's environment but probably the most so for the
child
.
Perfectionism, procrastination, social withdrawal, and oppositional behaviors can be a common part of
child
development in today's culture of hyper-achievement combined with technology.
Child
and adolescent behaviors viewed as problematic are frequently communications to those closest to them about a difficulty they are experiencing in their world. I work with
children
and with families who are struggling to understand their
child
's academic, behavioral, and emotional struggles.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
