I work with individual adult and
adolescent
clients to heal symptoms such as depression, anxiety, addictions, body image issues, somatic pain or illness, suicidal ideation, parent- child related difficulties, and attachment-based wounding. Through the lens of Internal Family Systems, a non-pathologizing approach to healing trauma, I help clients to align with their internal resource for healing, get to know the true meaning of their symptoms, and unburden the pain they carry. Clients report feeling greater connectedness, expanded perspective on their lives and compassion for themselves and others around them following treatment.

Starting therapy can feel exciting and intimidating—especially when trying to find the right fit for yourself, your child/

Imagine breaking free from repetitive, scary, and hurtful thoughts & feelings; feeling secure, serene, & at home with yourself even on hard days; knowing you're capable, worthy, and connected to love. I believe that healing and growth are innate human capacities which can become overwhelmed by powerful and/or chronic stressors. My priorities for our healing relationship together are to ensure a sense of safety for you in the therapy process, as well as collaborativity. I take an integrative approach to healing, including mindfulness practices, archetypal psychology, art therapy, play therapy, somatic modalities, and nutritional psychology. Additionally, I have a therapy dog that is an integral presence in the sessions. She is calm, friendly, and very grounding and sweet. I see clients in person; telehealth as a back-up only.

Perfectionism, procrastination, social withdrawal, and oppositional behaviors can be a common part of child development in today's culture of hyper-achievement combined with technology. Child and
adolescent
behaviors viewed as problematic are frequently communications to those closest to them about a difficulty they are experiencing in their world. I work with children and with families who are struggling to understand their child's academic, behavioral, and emotional struggles.

For the last 20 years my clinical training and experience has been focused on family system dynamics, child development,
teen
and adult substance use, and increasing healthy communication.
The work you and I will do together is focused on your goals and needs and capitalizes on your strengths. My assessment process takes into account the biological, psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural aspects of your life. Once that assessment is completed, you and I will explore the issues and needs that you are trying to manage by utilizing a "motivational interviewing" approach. We then work to discover the maladaptive behaviors and coping mechanisms; and explore healthy, productive, and strengths-based strategies for getting these needs met.

I work primarily with adult men and late
teen
adolescents. I help people who struggle with emotional connection in their relationships with their partners, family and friends. Struggles in emotional connection sometimes take the form of difficulty being vulnerable and comfortable in relationship, effectively communicating needs and wants or sensing a lack of meaning, direction or purpose in life. It's through deepening our emotional connections, first with ourselves, that we can then go forward in life and relationships from a more secure and confident place.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
