We all struggle with the difficult experiences life presents, experiences that are linked to life’s pleasures and joys. We can face loneliness and loss, feelings of unworthiness, unexpected changes and the stress that comes with demanding circumstances. I work with adults suffering from depression, anxiety, relationship problems, trauma, difficulties in work or school, feelings of being without meaning or purpose, feeling alone, and other forms of psychological pain. My goal is to provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment to explore, find meaning, connect more deeply with others, and reconnect with the deepest parts of yourself.

On paper, everything looks good. You have a good job, you’re in a relationship and you live somewhere great. You did all the things you were told would make you happy and for some reason, you are feeling off, disconnected or empty. You may be asking yourself, “what’s the point” or “is this all there is?” You are wanting more, but aren’t entirely sure what that is. You may be drinking, relying on substances or food to deal with these feelings. You’re wanting to make a change and it’s the time do it. This has probably been the case for some time. Well, nothing changes if nothing changes.

They develop trust in the therapeutic relationship and make lasting gains. I honor each one.

My primary focus in therapy is on the problems that develop in intimate relationships. In today's world the interactions within the couple relationship are impacted by rapidly changing societal patterns and many conflicting demands and pressures. Partners also bring their own family and psychological histories that cause problems in relating that are often subtle and confusing. I use a non-judgmental, compassionate approach to help intimate partners, married, considering marriage, or contemplating separation or divorce, work through their problems and find a path forward to the happiest present, and future possible.

Life can sometimes feel like it’s closing in when you’re caught in patterns of rigid thinking—when you believe that things can’t ever change, that you’re not capable, or that the world is unforgiving and unsafe. These kinds of beliefs can fuel a cycle of anxiety, depression, and isolation, making it hard to feel at ease with yourself or engage fully with others.

I have had the privilege of working with individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness and persistent emotional disturbance within the residential setting, allowing me to cultivate skills such as conflict resolution, crisis management and skill building as well as continuing to strengthen skills like listening, patience, and the development of a working alliance. I believe that my personal and professional experiences have allowed me to develop a solid belief and understanding that meaningful psychotherapy centered around trust, honesty, and a shared understanding of goals can truly change oneself and the life one wants to lead.

Some people sense wisdom within dark or difficult places—and seek support to learn and grow through them. Anxiety, depression, and addiction are not merely signs of pathology, but expressions of a larger system seeking awareness. These experiences may be intimately connected to one’s greatest gifts: one's sensitivity, insight, and drive toward growth—qualities that may be misunderstood or misdirected.

Let’s be honest—being human can be a rather wild and absurd experience. Navigating both our inner and outer worlds can often feel overwhelming. This is where I can lend a helping hand. I have been fortunate to have wonderful people walk alongside me and support me in my life, and I want to provide that same experience for you.

I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up.
My goal for each man I work with is to provide hope and support while facilitating the recovery process. This usually requires us to dig deep and figure out why we engage in destructive behaviors. It also requires us to develop a treatment plan that specifically targets the maladaptive behaviors and reduces the chance of relapse.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
