I've been an educator for over 20 years, at Dartmouth College and UC Santa Barbara, where I met many young adults facing stress, anxiety, and depression. Their experience inspired me to start clinical training in 2005 at the New Center for Psychoanalysis in LA, where I have also been a faculty member. My approach to psychoanalysis is interdisciplinary; I'm affiliated with the Neuroscience Institute at UCSB and was a clinical member of THRIVE Infant-Family Program in LA. My current research focuses on the links between biology, sociality, psychology and the environment. I specialize in infant-family therapy, adults, and
seniors
.

My clients have been from pre-teens to
seniors
, both genders, diverse races and all sexual orientations.
My theoretical orientation is psychodynamic. Using the most appropriate and beneficial modality that fits with the client and their needs. I work collaboratively with a client to arrive at their personal goals in therapy. I have found life is a journey of learning how to live to the fullest with all the gifts that we possess and discovering others along the way. With all the experiences that we have in this life, a persons perspective makes a huge difference in how they experience it. My hope is to help find the perspective that helps alleviate suffering and creates a space for healing and thriving.

My practice focuses on psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, adults, and
seniors
. Some reasons folks seek my help is to assess for autism, intellectual deficits, learning disorders, ADHD, as well as to address possible depression/anxiety that often accompany these conditions. In some cases, I am asked to perform testing to inform the efficacy of ADHD/ADD medication through the use of continuous performance testing. My approach is to learn about the whole person rather than rely on tests alone to produce an evaluation best suited to your needs.

I specialize in working with people who have complicated relationships with their bodies. My patients come to me because they are interested in: addressing eating issues before they turn into a full-blown eating disorder; learning to live better with chronic pain or illness; reconsidering their use of alcohol and drugs; or learning to live in their bodies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or non-binary individuals. Many of my patients have also been through difficult or even traumatic events, that at times have made their bodies feel unsafe. I help my patients to reestablish a sense of trust and safety in their bodies.

I work with clients on tools and strategies to help with symptom reduction while we uncover what you need for a deeper level of healing. In a safe, non-judgmental space I can help you identify the thoughts, narratives and distorted core beliefs that cause you suffering, keep you repeating the same patterns and block you from a higher quality of life. With gentleness and compassion we can explore the places you may get triggered and the old wounds that continue to cause fear and pain.

Personal counseling can be very helpful during a challenging season of life. I offer the opportunity to bring fresh insight and clarity into your situation in a way that is often difficult to achieve on your own. My counseling model draws from some excellent and highly regarded systems of therapy. In addition to a fundamental base in Cognitive Therapy concepts, I am an EMDR Therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and am trained and experienced in Trauma Recovery. I also practice Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT).

How can I find a therapist in Santa Barbara?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
