I specialize in adult and
adolescent
anxiety disorders such as social anxiety, panic disorder and OCD, as well as mood disorders. My expertise is also in couples therapy and relational issues - I love working with couples, because of the synergy that relationships provide. I use a lot of active methods, arts, maps, genograms, physical space, roleplay methods: techniques and strategies beyond mere talk therapy that use nonverbal dimension.

A psychotherapist and credentialed schoolteacher, I have worked with children of all ages and their families for the past 20 years. This unique background--combining family therapy, child development, and education--provides a strong foundation for meeting individual, child, and family needs and fostering long-term happiness and success. In general, the families I work with are dealing with issues of infant, child, and
adolescent
development. Families may be facing such challenges as preparing for the arrival of a newborn, children’s behavior issues or depression, school-related concerns, and life transitions.

Finding the right therapist is important. I approach therapy in a warm and relational way, and believe confidentiality and non-judgmental responses are crucial to creating a safe and trusting space. I know it can be hard to open up and start the process, so I make sure my client's feel comfortable to talk about the hard things and share about themselves authentically. Many of the situations I help people with involve experiencing depression or anxiety, processing recent or past trauma, important life or identity transitions,
adolescent
struggles, relationship concerns, and wanting personal growth and healing.

I work primarily with adult men and late
teen
adolescents. I help people who struggle with emotional connection in their relationships with their partners, family and friends. Struggles in emotional connection sometimes take the form of difficulty being vulnerable and comfortable in relationship, effectively communicating needs and wants or sensing a lack of meaning, direction or purpose in life. It's through deepening our emotional connections, first with ourselves, that we can then go forward in life and relationships from a more secure and confident place.

Relationships are complex & it may be time to explore how you’ve been impacted by past unhealthy relationships. You may feel as if you’re not enough, a bother or annoyance to your family or others. Often seeking acceptance from the others even though you know it may not happen. The struggle one has towards being accepted by family/others in order to feel as if you are good enough can often feel unbearable or never ending. Survivors of past damaged relations can make one feel as if you have no worth or value & leave you struggling to identify your worth & seek approval from others. You are not alone in these thoughts & feelings.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
