Psychotherapy is a path to understanding the Self. My background is in family systems and Jungian psychology. I work with individuals around issues of anxiety, depression, creativity, and trauma. Depth therapy often includes work with dreams, art , and sandplay. In addition, I use EMDR for trauma when addressing issues of PTSD. I specialize in sexual abuse with adults as well as other kinds of trauma. I enjoy working with people from diverse cultures and orientations. As a supervisor for 25 years, I enjoy working with interns on their way to licensure. Buddhist mindfulness practice informs my life and work.

I've found that having a dedicated space to unpack your heart with someone who unconditionally supports your growth & has a skill set/capacity to do so is priceless. Therapy isn't just for healing trauma, working with a disorder but is a preventative gift (to you and your loved ones).

I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in Somatic Psychotherapy. Somatic simply means "relating to the body" and in therapy this means that I have been uniquely trained to integrate the wisdom from our biology into treatment. Our bodies relate information that, should we choose to listen, can support our overall mental health. This way of working can have profound effects on anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions, and disordered eating. The clients that receive maximum benefit from my approach have an open mind about how the body influences thoughts, not just how thoughts influence the body.

I've spent my career as a therapist helping children, adults, and couples deal with difficult emotions, relationships, and trauma. I practice trauma informed care even when trauma isn't the focus. In my office you will find radical acceptance, compassion, and a fellow traveler on your journey. I understand that starting therapy can be difficult, especially the first time, so I take the time to build a caring relationship. Therapy wont be sterile or rushed or cookie cutter. You can expect to reduce suffering, strengthen your authentic self, challenge beliefs, foster resiliency, and create more space for curiosity and compassion.

“An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” Victor Frankl We are living in times where the abnormal has become the norm. Latent fears, anxieties, depression and loss have overwhelmed so many of us, leaving us emotionally and physically exhausted. These feelings can be even further exacerbated by trauma both past and present. They can interfere with our relationships and goals, leave us feeling overwhelmed, or even manifest as chronic illness. The important thing to remember is that you do not have to do it on your own. There is help.

Each of us passes through struggles that are difficult to cope with. In working together to form a therapeutic relationship we can become healthier and more able to react more skillfully to the challenges that present themselves. My work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families is based off a strong clinical foundation and woven together with compassion, respect and caring. By resolving some of our issues we can become balanced and find improved overall health (mentally, physically, spiritually, financially, emotionally).

Welcome! I help people with a variety of problems, from depression and anxiety to trauma and recovery. I can help you. I am a depth therapist (seeing causes, rather than only symptoms) and a somatic therapist (integrating a healthy mind and body), and I've found that more important than my background is a non-judgmental attitude, attention to your personal needs, and the quality of a collaborative therapy relationship. I'm on your side. My clients gain crucial insights, learn essential coping skills and dramatically improve their relationships, outlook, and prospects for the future. Their lives become much more vital and satisfying.

A person comes to therapy when their present ways of being in relationship, or in the world, no longer seem to hold the meaning they once did. My aim is to support you in creating a new foundation of hope, purpose, and meaning in your life. I help people seek wholeness through the integration of mind, body, and soul, thus expanding their current level of understanding, and in so doing, creating the capacity to live more meaningfully.

I have a curiosity in learning about people's stories and bring compassion to the experience of a life out of balance. Therapy can help us develop wise responses to reach our goals and find solutions to life's problems. There are many reasons to seek therapy. Therapy creates a container to explore and attend to the difficulties in our lives. Therapy supports lasting change through awareness. In therapy we explore fulfillment and work toward courage and wisdom.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
