I believe that everyone has the capacity to heal, change, and grow. Sometimes life brings us more than we can manage, and seeking help to navigate through these difficult times is often a key component for the healing process. I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and parents, helping them work together, so the whole family can gain therapeutic benefit during challenging seasons. By providing a supportive and compassionate environment, I encourage a space where one can freely explore their feelings and challenge themselves using a client-centered and mindfulness-based approach.

I believe that every day up until now has helped you to be the person you are today, and find it helpful to explore your family of origin dynamics to help in giving you some insights about your current functioning and relationships with others. While exploring the past, however, I find that my patients are coming in for symptom reduction, and not just insight. Which is why I am also very solution-focused. Through the combination of the two, my clients typically see a decrease in current symptoms, yet gain insight into preventing them in the future.

No one gets to choose our family of origin, our physical attributes, our socioeconomic background, ethnicity, or our academic acumen. Many of us grew up in environments that did not support the healthy development of our identity, ability to connect well with others, stand up for our own viewpoints and preferences, problem solve, manage personal responsibilities, set goals, and resolve relational conflicts. Our coping skills to address the pain, loss, stress, and despair are not working or non-existent. We sometimes wonder if our lives could be different, happier, more purposeful, positive, and gratifying. The answer is YES!

Despite our best efforts, sometimes it just doesn’t seem like life goes quite the way we planned. Family /relationship conflicts, worry about a child’s choices/behaviors, feelings of overwhelm/anxiety, grief/loss or a major life transition are often a part of our lives. And, unfortunately, sometimes these events are compounded by a lack of support or critic voices. Although it may not feel like it, I truly believe we are all doing the best we can in any given moment with the tools & information we have at that time and am passionate about supporting you in discovering your strengths and new strategies to create the changes you seek.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
