I love the integrative power of EMDR and use it along with dreamwork, body awareness, creativity and
spirituality
.
With over 30 years experience, my approach is holistic integrating the connection between mind, body, heart and spirit. Certified in EMDR therapy by the EMDR International Association, I find EMDR to be a powerful tool that I use along with other treatment modalities to facilitate healing. I specialize in working with trauma, eating disorders, addiction recovery, grief, depression, anxiety and relationship issues. I especially work with clients who have trust and abandonment issues due to childhood trauma, neglect or abusive parents. Early dysfunctional family patterns and lack of nurturing can affect self-esteem, intimate relationships and work performance.

I thoroughly enjoy supporting teens, parents, individuals and couples reach their full sense of being at ease in themselves. I believe in neurodiversity; that each individual is "wired" in their own particular and unique way, and that therapy supports making the best of one's neurology. I assist clients discover their inner wisdom, and engage in exploration of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that impede, and augment, the creations of harmonious relationships, and full potential. As a Jungian psychoanalyst and clinical member of the San Francisco Jung Institute, I incorporate Jungian theory into my work, such as dream analysis to understand unconscious processes, assessment of personality types to improve relationship capabilities, active imagination to expand existing creativity and enhance transpersonal connections, and
spirituality
or ones connection to all natural wonders.
In my 30+ years practicing psychotherapy, I have had extensive experience working with adults who are trying to adjust to the problems that life presents to us---a difficult childhood, trauma, anxiety, depression, postpartum depression, stress, working with a child who has a difficult mental illness, sexual abuse, couples' relationship struggles (heterosexual, gay, and lesbian), and grief from the loss of someone treasured. Always my treatment goal is to facilitate the improvement in the quality of life for each individual and to look for the creative aspect within the destruction. Healing is a natural process, but sometimes it is difficult to remember that fact.

If you work with me, I may inquire about your somatic experience or awareness or ask you to visualize a part of yourself, or we may explore aspects of your thoughts, feelings, sexuality, or
spirituality
.
I am passionate about helping you explore what’s getting in the way of being your full self and having the connections you want. I provide psychotherapy to adult individuals, couples, and more than couples from a place of open-mindedness, curiosity, and sex-positivity, and an awareness that our lives and relationships don’t always unfold as expected. People who work well with me include those with liminal identities that may not fit neatly into boxes and who may feel like outsiders in some spaces.

Depression, anxiety, even relational problems, often have a meaning which--when understood--leads to a more productive and satisfying life. Utilizing a psychodynamic approach, we explore the meaning of the difficulties you are experiencing to heal them and provide you a more fulfilling life. Having worked with all ages, from pre-school to elderly, my primary practice is with adults and adolescents. I specialize in dealing with trauma, and am certified as a Post-Combat Behavioral Health specialist. I am trained in the utilization of EMDR and, when applicable, we may learn to use a mindfulness-based therapy in the treatment of depression and anxiety.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
