A happy marriage is the best gift you can give your baby.
The goal of therapy is to enable people to have richer and more satisfying lives. I match my approach to the person I'm seeing, offering both short-term, pragmatic, solution-oriented therapy, and longer-term treatment that involves complex historical material and ingrained self-defeating patterns. I think of therapy as an opportunity to learn better ways to live and thrive in the present. I use a combination of approaches including EMDR, AEDP, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and longer-term work to change recurring patterns.

In addition to being licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in both California and Hawaii, I hold a Masters degree in Counselor Education.
Over twenty-five years ago I walked out of my first session as a therapist in gratitude that I had found work I loved. Today I am equally fascinated by and grateful for this opportunity to connect with others and be a part of their growth toward emotional, relational, mental, and spiritual wholeness. I specialize in working with couples and other relationships, but also have significant experience in helping with depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment, military lifestyle, personal growth and life skills. Integrating my training, experience, skill and personality, I create an adaptable course of therapy for each client's unique circumstances.

I can help guide parents through the challenge of the teen years or with conflict that comes with being part of an extended family. I specialize in issues around divorce, coparenting and restructuring life after a divorce.

One of you is ready to leave the marriage , and one of you wants to stay in.
You and your spouse are not in a good place. One of you is ready to walk away, and one of you is desperately hanging on. You've had tough times in the past, but this feels different. If you've made several attempts to make it work, and find yourself back in a hopeless place, divorce may seem like the next step. If you are the one hanging on, feeling confused about what's happened, you are desperate to keep things together. The idea of divorce is terrifying to you. You both feel misunderstood, your experience of the marriage does not align. You cannot agree about anything.

Hi! I'm James McLaughlin, I'm a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Located in the city of Sacramento. I work with individuals, couples, and families who are looking for help navigating the challenges of life. I focus on getting to the core of what may be getting in the way of fulfillment and work actively and collaboratively to re-write your life story. My approach of choice is Narrative Therapy, which separates the person from the problem, and allows people to understand the power of narratives in their lives. A simple example may be a narrative casting you as the victim vs. a narrative casting you as in control.

Maybe you are stuck in patterns that do not serve you. Maybe experiences and relationships that should give you pleasure leave you wanting. Or find yourself ruminating about the past or worrying about the future rather than living expansively, now. While many people can identify "the problem": alcohol and drugs; the death of a loved one; the end of a marriage , etc. Sometimes our inability to live fully confuses us. Together we can look at what is getting in the way. As a guide and companion I can help you heal past wounds and open to the joy and possibilities your life has to offer.

I am Full Professor and Chair of the Counseling Psychology Department at Dominican University of California teaching graduate level counseling psychology courses to those aspiring to be Marriage and Family Therapists.
Personal issues often show up in relationships where we get caught in freeze, fight, or flight reactions. Friendships, colleagues, family, and intimate partners are our best mirrors leading to effective personal work in therapy. My experiential three-fold model of problem solving integrates mind, body, and emotions. We begin with the description of a problem or struggle, identify associated emotions, and locate the way the issue is held somatically. This may develop into a visual or symbolic representation with which one can dialogue, apply insight, antidote and release, or reveal deeper targets that need to be reprocessed.

Marriage is complicated. When trouble starts, most couples try to fix it on their own. That's a good thing. The problems come when the couple isn't able to repair what's broken, yet they don't seek professional help soon enough. One study reports that most couples wait six years before going into therapy. By then, the layers of pain have piled up. <> After working with couples for many years, I've developed a unique method of untangling the hurt and getting to the heart of the matter. Most couples can heal relatively quickly and enjoy lasting results.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
