As a young adult hispanic male with young daughters, and a background in family counseling, substance use, sports mental health, I have personal insight as well as experience working with individuals like yourself.
Finding a therapist can be difficult, especially finding a therapist who looks like you and can relate to struggles you face with. Being a young male in todayʻs society can be difficult and often times problems are over looked due to the stigma of "man up." Being a parent and adjusting to the changes of a growing family, strain on a marriage, issues from childhood impacting parenting can be difficult to identify and reflect on. Being an athlete and finding space to process how issues outside of the sport could be impacting your performance can be outside of your comfort zone because personal or athletic lives tend to be seperate.

In today’s world, we are surrounded by stressors at every level—personal, community, national and global. There’s no doubt that when there is so much chaos in the world and our lives it can feel like we are out of control. We may feel “stuck” perhaps with unbearable sadness, grief, overwhelm or worry that have ripple effects in our daily lives including work, school, family, and relationships. Talking to loved ones can be helpful, but sometimes we’d rather talk to someone who is impartial. Our work will focus on creating a space where you feel heard, understood, cared for, and accepted as you are.

As LGBTQ people we often find ourselves wondering "where do I belong in this world?" and "why can't I just be myself?" It seems like we've tried everything but we don't feel like we belong or we are in a safe place to live & work. We often wonder... when is this going to get better? When can I just live my life fully how I am? Sometimes we feel sad and it can be a very lonely place. We can even forget just how special and unique we are because we are so different and surrounded by those who just don't get it. We really want someone who can connect to us and make our experiences feel validated, reminding us that we are beautiful.

I seek to provide a thoughtful and reflective setting where clients develop greater understanding of their problems and limitations through honest exploration of themselves, and to bolster strengths/foster growth. I provide a friendly and open atmosphere to invite sharing of whatever thought or feeling that comes up so that they can be explored, analyzed and ultimately changed if you want. I work in a collaborative way and do not necessarily see my role as an advice giver, but as a thoughtful companion in helping you find your own solutions and understanding. I use a flexible blend of clinical techniques and theories.

My work with individual adults at all stages of life recognizes the transformative power of even the most challenging life transitions. These opportunities may take many forms: fears about mortality and aging, grief and loss, questions about career and calling, spiritual and existential crises, shifts in sexual identity and orientation, and relationship challenges. I also work with couples (including LGBTQ) and adult family members who want to improve their relationships. Y sí, hablo español. Si desea obtener más información, llámeme, por favor, y podemos platicar de sus necesidades. Trabajo solamente con adultos y no acepto aseguranza.

I have worked more than 30 years w individuals & families with serious psychological and relational problems including the mood, behavior and substance problems that tear families apart. I help individuals and families navigate the perilous course of finding solutions while we work to improve serenity and sanity for all. Individual work is relational w/psychodynamic and a Real World approach. I have developed the “Stress-Induced Impaired Coping" model for family system distress and recovery. The majority of my therapy practice is as an Addiction Couple's Therapist. I offer Private Intensive Weekend Retreats. These are 16-hour workshops that take place in my office in Mill Valley on one reserved weekend. My approach is best described as interactive, personable, nonjudgmental, and aimed at bringing about change that's both meaningful and real. I tend not to view people's issues or concerns as a form of pathology or neurosis, but rather as particular problems in living. I see each person as genuinely unique, and so avoid cookie-cutter approaches. My role is to help individuals and couples work through problems as effectively and efficiently as possible, in a way that builds confidence, self-respect, hope, and, ultimately, a fresh way of living life.

What type of San Rafael mental health professional is right for me?
While most types of therapy have a lot in common, they also fall into clusters that share core features, such as cognitive therapies or psychodynamic approaches. It is important to seek someone who practices evidence-based therapy, meaning one or more forms of treatment that have been scientifically evaluated and tested, and demonstrate consistent improvement for a majority of patients.

If you are unsure about choosing the right therapist, it might be useful to first learn more about therapy types and modalities.
How to find a therapist in San Rafael?
When looking to find a therapist, it is certainly important to consider training and credentials. Studies also indicate that the therapeutic alliance, or the relationship the client develops with the therapist, is an important factor in their ability to work together to achieve the client’s goals.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Finding a psychologist or therapist who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

How to use my insurance?
Understanding cost and insurance coverage is an important concern for many people. With some basic research and conversations with prospective therapists, you should be able to have a good understanding of the best way to afford therapy.
