I work with people who have problems of depression,
anxiety
, malaise, loss, relationship impasses and difficult life transitions, who have experienced disruptions, constrictions or impasses in relationships or in functioning well in the world, or who seek an ally when meaning or purpose have become elusive or lost from view.
For over thirty years, I have provided understanding and relief to people who have come to me in emotional distress and psychological pain. I offer psychotherapeutic help with warmth, patience, skill, and an open mind as has long been my depth-oriented approach. Psychological distress points us toward the landscape of our private vulnerabilities and emotional injuries, but also toward pathways toward restoration and healing. I invite you to listen to these internal communications with me, to learn from them, and to discover ways to translate them into guideposts for change toward greater balance, confidence, and contentment.

Even the richest of lives lived will bring with it many challenges and emotional pain. Unfortunately, it's often natural that we add to that suffering through worries and rumination, obsessive problem-solving, and a fixation on our shame,
fears
, and doubt. Our work together can help you make sense of this struggle, break free of unhelpful patterns of thinking, and facilitate more conscious and deliberate ways of interpreting and responding to your world. Let's sort out what's important to you and what's getting in the way, explore how and where you'd like to invest your energy, and take control of your emotional wellness.

Have you had a difficult or traumatic life experience that you can't recover from on your own? Did you grow up in a chaotic home where it felt hard to be seen or to get your needs met? You may have felt a persistent
anxiety
and lack of safety due to issues beyond your control. If you struggle in your current relationships and seem to experience too many painful feelings like fear, anger, sadness, shame, or guilt you might have unresolved trauma, even if it doesn't seem to match your idea of what trauma is. I can help you heal from the past and let go of your negative feelings/beliefs so that you can live more fully in the present.

Mental health issues are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth. Many of us think "this is not how I thought it would be" at some point during the perinatal period. The stress of becoming a parent can cause us to unearth unhealed trauma and pain. We can experience
anxiety
, (sometimes scary) intrusive and/or obsessive thoughts, relationship conflict, and communication breakdown during the first weeks, months, and years of parenting. My approach is neurodivergent-friendly, warm, and insightful. This means that my primary aim as a therapist is to act as a compassionate guide during your process of self-discovery.

I specialized in trauma,
anxiety
, depression, chronic and life threatening illness, and healthy relationship building.
Cultivating meaningful-healthy relationships may be especially difficult when our sense of self is overshadowed by traumatic and emotionally painful experiences. My approach to the therapy process focuses on helping foster your innate strengths and resiliency while exploring your vulnerabilities and concerns. Together we help you build a greater understanding of yourself through healing limiting patterns,
fears
, and beliefs. In this way, you become rooted in a life grounded in meaning, aliveness, and depth. I believe that building a stronger relationship with yourself can help cultivate healthier relationships with others, making them easier to initiate, maintain, and enjoy.

I see individual adults who seek relief from
anxiety
and self-defeating thinking and behaving, as well as couples, including adult child and parents wanting to understand each other, learn how to make effective repairs and find and feel a more compassionate love.
I see adult individuals who would like to: feel empowered, self-compassionate and self-expressive, to know their heart's desires, and to overcome self-defeating thoughts, behaviors and
anxiety
. I see straight and queer couples who want to: learn new ways of relating to co-create secure and fulfilling attachment, to learn how to make effective repairs with each other, and to learn how to manage oneself and one's partner in the best way.

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who came to practice later in life and believe my life's experience makes me a better therapist. I enjoy working with children and older adults in life transitions. I treat children who suffer from
anxiety
and depression and those that are victims of abuse, abandonment, and homelessness. I support Transgender & Gender Non-Conforming Clients. I also work with adults facing a life transition. This may be caring for an older parent, loss of a loved one, or a life threatening illness. These situations trigger a mixed bag of emotions that can be overwhelming.

I find that what brings people to psychotherapy is a personal struggle, feeling stuck or a sense that something is missing, though what specifically is missing may not be known. As a psychologist I work with feelings of frustration or disappointment that may be related to
anxiety
, fear or prior messages that keep us from achieving personal goals. I am experienced in working with lifes transitions, such as a change in career, becoming a parent, diagnosis of a chronic illness or retirement. I believe bringing these challenges into therapy can be both illuminating and helpful.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
