Anger
is a natural basic human emotion that is often used to express negative feelings. We believe that
anger
is a secondary emotion, usually a reaction to underlying emotions such as frustration, hurt, loss, or disrespect. Road rage, violent behavior, verbal abuse, aggression, intimidation, and lack of empathy, are examples of issues that benefit from
anger management
. The goal of our program is to teach people to identify, understand and defuse their own
anger
by learning healthy expressions of
anger
that are acceptable to society, so that violence and self-destructive behavior can be avoided.

Though no two treatments are the same, I specialize in treating addiction,
anger
, anxiety, and depression, and also specialize in resolving deeper internal conflicts related to identity, relationships, sexuality, and shame.
Life can be incredibly hard, and there is no "manual" for how to navigate life's overwhelming situations and complex emotional experiences. During these tough times, it's common to feel "stuck" and desperately wanting solutions, while struggling to identify them on your own. At this juncture, the objectivity, support, and insight of a licensed clinical psychologist can help you to move through this time in your life. I have witnessed this process, personally, and helped many clients persevere through intense periods of conflict and pain.

You are not broken. It is human to feel loss, sadness,
anger
, fear, or unworthiness. Recent advances in neuroscience can help us understand why we feel stuck, sad, stressed, scared or alone. When we begin to understand the implicit/unconscious feelings/beliefs that automatically run inside of us we begin a journey that can lead to more awareness, and therefore to more choice in our lives. The hardest part of this journey is the first step; to make your growth a priority enough to tolerate the discomfort of facing what isn't working.

THERAPY IS AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE SELF... The person that is most dependent on you is your future self. We don't often think of ourselves in this way, but the decisions we make as we move through our lives affect everything that comes after. This is why it is crucial that we treat ourselves with the same kindness and generosity we would show to anyone we dearly love. Often, our decisions are informed by old patterns of which we are not aware, and which were formed when we were quite young and lacked capacity for perspective or reflection.

Navigating life can be difficult. Perhaps you find yourself stuck in problematic relational patterns, struggling to find a different way. Maybe you criticize and put limitations on yourself. Perhaps you have endless empathy for everyone but yourself. Maybe you’ve turned to alcohol or substances to avoid the pain. Maybe you don’t feel much of anything at all. Perhaps you are simply in a rut and you don’t know how to get yourself out of it. The good news is, by simply looking for help you are on your way to regaining confidence, agency, and a fuller, more authentic sense of self. A self that CAN navigate the difficulties of life.

Many challenges we experience in daily life relate to conflict between parts of ourself. Each part reflects our body’s own loving attempts to care for us in the ways it knows. When we shift one part of the feedback loop, our body's whole system rearranges. This is what makes transformation possible. My approach to therapy is holistic, somatic and client-centered. I start with creating a non-judgmental, inclusive space for you to come as you are. As we form and reach for your goals, our work may include body and mindfulness practices, regulation tools, trauma integration, behavior/communication coaching, and creative guidance.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
