I am particularly strong with adolescent and young adult issues.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist whose specialty is helping others improve their relationships. I believe that we all aspire to have deep, loving connections in our lives. I will help you to remove hurdles that may be impeding such connections in your life. Often, among these hurdles may be unhealed childhood experiences, baggage from previous relationships, and dysfunctional relating styles. Becoming more clear on what you have inherited from your family and what you developed as coping mechanisms will be the first step in aligning with your authentic self.

I would be honored to join you and your child, adolescent or teen on this journey.
For over 20 years, I have worked in urban and suburban schools before transitioning to private practice. K-5 has been my most recent focus, and have worked with middle and high school students in previous years. I have supported students with anxiety, social and behavioral challenges, mood, grief, and attention difficulties. Working collaboratively with parents we can help your child feel a sense of belonging, uncover the frustrations and worry, relieve symptoms of anxiety and reduce the anger and behavioral challenges using a strength-based approach. I'm here to help!

In addition to my private practice, I am a staff psychologist and ADHD Clinic coordinator in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Kaiser Permanente.
As your therapist, my desire is to learn about your story. I commit to work alongside you to lessen burdens you are carrying while equipping you with additional skills to live a more fulfilled life. The things you are going through, or have gone through, impact how you see yourself, the world, and how you approach life. Sometimes those things hold us back from how we want to live.

Are you looking for a therapist for your teen ? There are so many challenges during the teenage years, and therapy can help teens better understand what's going on. We can work together to help teens clarify their thoughts and feelings and explore how they fit in with their friends and family. Sometimes, it can be hard for teens to know how to talk about their experiences, and as we work together to come up with the right words, we’ll incorporate experiential exercises, images, and expressive arts. I can also provide support for parents, to help them discover new ways to connect with their teens and support them in difficult times.

I have been providing child therapy and adult psychotherapy for 20 years. I am an active therapist, committed to staying deeply engaged in our moment-to-moment exchange. I enjoy working with clients who are psychologically minded, who want to get to know themselves better. I love helping people see their own potential, expand their beliefs about themselves and develop a growth mindset about their hopes and dreams. I currently have a home office where I still have a few daytime hours available and also I provide video counseling via HIPPA approved platform a couple of evenings during the week.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
