By providing a safe and supportive environment, clients are able to explore new approaches to ongoing life challenges. Some techniques I use suggest that our thoughts effect how we behave. Therefore, if we change the way we think, we may notice changes in our overall mood and behavior. My optimistic and caring style support self growth and empowerment. Part of my role as a therapist is to help my clients establish realistic goals that bring about positive change. I enjoy working with children , adolescents and adults.

You are so worried about your child . She cries everytime you drop her off at preschool and she is so shy at birthday parties that she won't leave your side. You thought she would outgrow this, but instead she seems to be more and more afraid of things. She is happy at home, but she still follows you from room to room. You just want her to relax and enjoy her childhood. You remember when your child first started school, how excited you were! You thought she would soon warm up and make friends. You want to be able to pick your child up from school and hear from the teacher that she was just fine once you left. You want to hear about what your child learned, and that your child played well with friends.

I also explore the relationship of ADHD and creativity in children and adults.
I have a background and life long interest in art, literature and philosophy that contributes to a unique clinical psychological view. This view includes mainstream psychology and also goes beyond to embrace subjects not often included in psychology. I am especially interested and experienced with gifted and creative personalities and problems associated with giftedness.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist whose specialty is helping others improve their relationships. I believe that we all aspire to have deep, loving connections in our lives. I will help you to remove hurdles that may be impeding such connections in your life. Often, among these hurdles may be unhealed childhood experiences, baggage from previous relationships, and dysfunctional relating styles. Becoming more clear on what you have inherited from your family and what you developed as coping mechanisms will be the first step in aligning with your authentic self.

My philosophy in working with youth and adults is to share cognitive and mindfulness techniques, in a supportive setting, to help my clients make positive changes in their thoughts and actions. Utilizing personal accountability, combined with humor and lightness, I aim to help clients cultivate compassion for themselves, so they may be willing to experiment with new tools. I strive to help clients come back into their bodies, more effectively process their feelings, and move decisively toward wellness. My theory is to be flexible and sensitive in my approach while moving clients toward a more confident, realized version of themselves.

I believe for therapy to be effective, there must be established trust, a willingness to be vulnerable and a commitment to be authentic. I work with those seeking for a more balanced sense of themselves. My style is direct, transparent, insight-oriented and Psychodynamic. I use cognitive behavioral techniques and evidence based practices to help clients achieve their goals of working through depression, managing anxiety, replenishing caregiver-burnt out and coping with life stress. I am a family educator and also believe a sense of humor (when appropriate), is necessary for this line of work. Certified SoulCollage® facilitator.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
