ADHD
and creativity in children and adults.
I have a background and life long interest in art, literature and philosophy that contributes to a unique clinical psychological view. This view includes mainstream psychology and also goes beyond to embrace subjects not often included in psychology. I have spent more than two decades providing assessments, consultation and therapy for young children and their families around issues of behavior, anxiety, depression,
ADHD
, ASD, learning disabilities and trauma.
You are so worried about your child. She cries everytime you drop her off at preschool and she is so shy at birthday parties that she won't leave your side. You thought she would outgrow this, but instead she seems to be more and more afraid of things. She is happy at home, but she still follows you from room to room. You just want her to relax and enjoy her childhood. You remember when your child first started school, how excited you were! You thought she would soon warm up and make friends. You want to be able to pick your child up from school and hear from the teacher that she was just fine once you left. You want to hear about what your child learned, and that your child played well with friends.

My philosophy in working with youth and adults is to share cognitive and mindfulness techniques, in a supportive setting, to help my clients make positive changes in their thoughts and actions. Utilizing personal accountability, combined with humor and lightness, I aim to help clients cultivate compassion for themselves, so they may be willing to experiment with new tools. I strive to help clients come back into their bodies, more effectively process their feelings, and move decisively toward wellness. My theory is to be flexible and sensitive in my approach while moving clients toward a more confident, realized version of themselves.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
