I have experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, families, parents, and individuals dealing with a diverse range of mental health and substance use issues.
“Look beside you, and I’ll be there;” this is my credo, both as an individual and as a therapist. Life is difficult; there are always challenges and struggles, and in many instances, it is the connection and support that one person gives another that makes the difference. I use a strength-based, client-centered approach to therapy. My work focuses on assisting clients to identify their own personal strengths and unique goals for treatment, express and process difficult and/or uncomfortable emotions, and learn effective coping and interpersonal skills that will help them throughout their life.

With specialties in addiction and dual diagnosis; including depression, anxiety and trauma history, I take an integrated, holistic approach to care. The therapeutic relationship is one in which optimum healing is, as a result of the reciprocal bond, between the therapist and the client. One can only be open to the experience of change and improvement in their life if they feel safe. This is the therapy space that I provide in order to help shape authentic, loving and accurate self-awareness. I provide nurturance, guidance, affirmation and compassionate reflection in order to help clients feel grounded in their own decision-making.

I have over 20 years of experience providing individual, couple, and group psychotherapy to adults and older teens. My orientation is eclectic, drawing from psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, gestalt, cognitive-behavioral, and internal family systems models. This means I have a variety of tools and approaches with which to help my clients understand and resolve the issues they face. Among the many issues and concerns I have helped people with are depression, substance abuse, relationship problems, affairs, sexual addiction, anxiety, grief, and personal growth. I am board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (the "ABPP" after my name).

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
