I do what I call "Nail on the head" therapy...if you want to put a nail in the wall, you get out a hammer, figure out where the stud is, and WHACK it on the head...you don't beat around it, you don't use your shoe, not if you want it to stay! Given this philosophy, I provide straightforward usable tools that will help YOU create the changes YOU most want to create...and I try to do so in a fairly short term manner. Check out my blog at: CreativeSolutionsCounseling.wordpress.com and see if my style of therapy is right for you...then give me a call and lets get starting on creating that changes that can really improve your life!

I enjoy supporting individuals with stress management, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, complex/developmental trauma, and substance/behavioral addiction. My work and life’s passion are centered around the belief that we all have the capacity to heal ourselves from within when we feel connection, compassion, and support from others. Our bodies contain a unique inner wisdom that helps guide the path back to our true selves. Becoming reacquainted with who we really are on a core level, combined with practicing effective communication strategies with others, allows for greater emotional, mental, and spiritual freedom.

It’s late. Today’s work is finally done. You’re the last one to bed, after snapping at everyone else. You pause...Instead of enjoying the moment of peace and quiet reflection that you long for, there’s a vague sense of dread. It seems that whenever you stop, you find yourself filled with anxiety. You feel off-center. Never at ease. Never enough. You don’t want to go to bed because you know it’ll be another restless night of tossing and turning, alone--again. No one gets it. You’re not just tired, you're weary. That weariness gnaws at you. That ache, that longing for something different, something better, something more...

In person and video therapy currently available. How do you deal with life transitions? As we walk through life, become part of a couple, raise our kids, transition to different careers and as we age, we are faced with a multitude of issues challenging our long held beliefs and in the world around us. Questions arise and we sometimes feel unsafe or hesitant as we are challenged to redefine who we are in an ever-changing and ever-challenging world. Sometimes it helps to have someone with us, someone there for us, someone providing a steadying hand, choices, options and understanding as we walk through the challenges of life.

Sometimes life gets overwhelming and the light at the end of the tunnel gets dim. I've been there and I know that at those times a little help can go a long way to put things back together again, to get a better perspective and/or to make necessary changes to get closer to that light again.

Connection is at the core of who we are, what we’re passionate about, and the most meaningful relationships we have. And yet so many things can interfere with our ability to connect: anxiety, depression, grief, traumatic experiences...how we cope with these things may inhibit our ability to build intimacy with those around us. I work with students and young adults, as well as those in mid-life and beyond, who experience anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or life transitions, that interfere with living fully you, fully now.

How can I find a therapist in San Luis Obispo County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
