My name is McKenna Talley and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have been providing mental health services for over a decade and I have been absolutely loving it. As a young adult, I had plans of making it on Broadway as an actress. My love for theater has stuck around, but over time I realized that I like helping real people recognize the role they play in their life is the greatest part they could ever have. Nothing speaks to my soul more than connecting to people and helping them find their main character energy. Life can be hard and I like to help people be their biggest fan rather than their biggest critic.

I have been providing direct and clinical supervision for over 15 years. Most of the work I have done has been in community based settings helping individuals and families struggling with addiction, trauma and mental health. I look forward to continuing this work through my private practice as I believe when one individual gets better the whole family can and it can change the trajectory for generations.

I believe safety to be a human right - not a privilege. This is what sits at the very core of who I am. This is what I bring to the work that I do. A certain intensity; a certain empathy; a certain knowing.

My clinical background includes work in community mental health, sexual assault crisis counseling, LGBTQIA affirming care, and trauma-focused therapy with individuals, couples, and families.
Many of the people I work with feel emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in survival mode, disconnected from themselves, or exhausted from constantly trying to hold everything together. I work especially well with LGBTQIA+ clients, trauma survivors, neurodivergent clients, and people navigating anxiety, grief, identity struggles, relationship pain, or major life transitions. My background includes extensive work with queer and trans communities and survivors of sexual violence, and I strive to create a therapy space that feels grounded, collaborative, and genuinely affirming.

I have extensive experience addressing trauma in women who have been victims of domestic violence. My approach is mostly Psychodynamic with Cognitive Restructuring to help clients process past trauma and gain insight into establishing healthy boundaries. This has helped many gain self-confidence and self-empowerment to move forward as survivors. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, psychoeducation, and skill training to help clients develop tools to manage somatic and emotional symptoms, fostering a sense of control and self in their lives.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
